Hotel Girls: Failed attempt with James

Was in Hong Kong today from macau to do some shopping and figured why not try to get with a "Bond girl" for some afternoon delight.
Was able to call james and he is is very friendly and helpful, but because i did not have a cell and he could not see my caller id # he was hesitant to let me make an appointment.
Too bad i hear lots of good things, but the only reason I post this is not to complain, hey he has a right to feel safe and make his girls safe, but to let you english speaking fellows know that
a) He does speak english and it seems it would be very easy if....

b) you have a cell phone.

If you are cell phone deprived then it will be a slightly frustrating and non productive experience...

damn that sucks, where is your cell phone?  If you don't have a GSM-compatible phone, you can always buy one at Fortress or one of the many MK places for as cheap as $250 or $300 HKD.

Is it really a safety issue?  Or is it all about controlling the flake factor?  Since so many cell phone numbers are anonymous I doubt it's for safety.

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.

wait, that doesn't make sense.  cellphone should display caller's number regardless if it's from a cellphone or land line.

A cellphone should raise more suspicion not less, like JeSun said, you can just buy a disposal one.

SIM Cards

These days whereever I travel I take my own cell and just buy a local SIM.

Works in most places, although in the states I had to buy a cheap prepaid phone - for some reason they do not sell SIM cards on their own.

Rule of thumb - take out you own SIM and leave it at home, but throw the phone in your luggage when you travel.

Rico - when you are in HK or China, you should pick up a dual-SIM phone, so that you can use your home UK SIM and your HK SIM at the same time.

I have a HK sim, I have kept  the same number for a couple of years now, considering it is freaking cheap to keep it active, so why not?    I have an older phone that I keep the HK sim in when I am here in Canada, and roaming means that I do actually get incoming calls from HK (mostly sales calls... damn it!).  I also have a different sim (china unicom, I think) with a local number for my regular destination area in China, makes it cheaper for people there to contact me when I am in town (and more polite as well).

Considering how wildly Rogers (canada cell company) charges for roaming, there is absolutely no chance in the world that my canadian SIM will be in when I am in Asia.  I coudl easily be running $20-$50hk a minute, especially if I leave the data on!

You can get a SIM card for your (unlocked) GSM phone at the 7-11 right in the airport (as you come out of the gate, turn right... it isn't far).  That puts you on the grid, gets you local emergency calls (999) etc.  It's a very good thing to have.   If your phone is locked, then I would do as others suggest, go pick up a cheapie GSM phone just to handle your HK local SIM.  As Jesun suggests, you can always get a dual SIM phone if you want to spend a little more (and you don't want to haul around two phones!).

price example, fortress has a MOTOROLA W156 < $300hk.  It's a very basic dual band GSM, but it as cheap as chips really (less than $40 US, or 24 pounds UK).  Once benefit if you pick up a slightly better phone than that is taking it back home and reselling it, especially good if you are in a market of locked phones.

I think most international phones shows up as roaming in the HK and Macau Area. Doesn't even work inside China for that matter.
China uses a different phone system from my experience.

the dual SIM phone will allow you to use both your UK SIM and your HK/China SIM at the same time.  As such, you can still receive calls with your UK SIM, as well as make calls (and receive calls) with your HK/China SIM.  The other option would be to carry around 2 phones.

A SIM card in HK is not expensive. I know some company also got good service when you are traveling around as roaming is a good service in HK.

So.. I guess you better buy a two SIM card phones, so that you need only one phone, or else, you need to have the transfer service.

Instead of buying a two SIM card phone, he can just take out the original one and put in the one he buys in HK. This is if he is not expecting any urgent calls on his UK SIM card while in HK.
