Hotels in Hong Kong

Would anyone like to come with a recommendation of hotel(s) in HK?

I'm traveling solo and have never been to HK before. I do not speak chinese. Hotels in all price classes are welcomed, though I myself would like to stay in the middle range.
I'm thinking staying on the "main" island is the best?

Information about transportation from airport and similar will surely be appreciated by me and hopefully others!

Langham Place in Kowloon is the best since its your first time to HK. It is affordable, luxurious, next to Mongkok MTR, and connected to the food court of the adjacent mall for quick food. It is close to all the "local" attractions.

Empire Hotel Causeway Bay - cheap and excellent.  Save your money up for the WGs.

If you are on a budget, I'd say the best hotel would be the Holiday Inn TST.  It is clean, affordable, good service, and is very conveniently located, with a MTR entrance across the street, a 7-11 right next to it, and sits atop Nathan road so you can hang with all the other tourists.  It is also in TST, so that's a plus if you are a tourist.

If you must stay on the Island, a good choice would be the Excelsior (great old HK feeling), and many tourists also opt for the Park Lane.  Both are in Causeway Bay, and is very convenient.

Luxury-wise, I personally think the Mandarin Oriental is the best hotel in HK, beating out even the Penninsula IMO.  There's a lot of choice here, but I'd say my personal preference would be Mandarin, Shangrila HK, and then Conrad, in that order.

If you are looking for something cheaper than $150 USD / night, then I would suggest looking up the thread as cited above by another poster.

On transportation to and from the airport, it's really quite simple.

You can take the Airport Express MTR and lug your bags across HK, it's fast and cheap.

You can arrange for a bus transfer to your hotel, which is about 150 hkd.  You will be in a bus with other people and the bus will make many stops.

You can take a taxi from the airport, which will cost you maybe 300 hkd or so, I haven't used those in a while so the price may vary a bit.

You can walk up to counter A1/B1 once clearing customs, and hire a private car transfer direct to your hotel, which would be in the 700 hkd range.

Or you can arrange your hotel to pick you up, again this will charge you maybe 500-1000 hkd, and they generally will have somebody waiting for you outside the gate so you have no chance of getting lost.

Personally I opt for the private car transfer as it's direct to your hotel and the drivers are quite professional.

Taxi is fine as well, and is the more economical choice, plus its almost the same as private car transfer.

MTR, I avoid because i hate rolling my luggage across the city streets.

The bus, i used to take since it was so cheap and drops you off at the hotel, but after almost 3 hour ride to hell in one, I stopped ever taking them again.

Airport Express MTR is 150HKD one-way.  Taxi-fare to TST or Central is about 350HKD.  So if you are travelling with another person, the cost of a taxi is only slightly more so than the Airport Express MTR.  The train is faster though (but you may not end up close to your hotel).

Nice one, didint know about that tourist one.. 'cos i don't treat myself as a tourist lol

Are there any restrictions to the lines you can travel on? Like going to Lo Wu on MTR is expensive, and if this allows it then its mega good value

...except Airport Express, East Rail Line First Class, Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau stations

here's the link: http://www.mtr.com.hk/eng/airport_express/aepass_index.html

i use this a lot as i can go HG or walk up, and while i'm a tourist, i've been coming to HK for 17 years

I would suggest Nikko Hongkong Hotel. It's a five star hotel and cost around $900 usually. Although it's been here for over 20yrs, its service and quality is value for money. Some rooms could provide u a good harbor view too.

P.S the free Airport Express Shuttle Bus can take u to this hotel.

I really have to thank everyone for their highly constructive responses!
also for the transportation issue. Im arriving late (about 11 pm) so I might take a taxi to ensure i dont get lost the first night by bus.

My main question is now The island vs. Kowloon. Whats the different between the districts? What districts are best for tourism , what is best for punting?

I'll be sure to check them all out, again thanks!

I like Prudential Hotel.  It's right above the Jordan MTR.  You don't even need to go to the street level and lug your goods from a day's shopping  around!  Plus it's around the TST area where there is plenty of "entertainment"

Best area for tourism would be TST or Causeway Bay.  Between the two, I would suggest Causeway Bay because it's a little more relaxed and balanced, whereas I find TST to be a bit too frenetic.  Both are normal choices for a tourist though.

For night activities, I think that Causeway Bay would be a better jump off point if you plan to visit Central/LKF.  If you're talking about WG/HG, then staying in TST would be a better option.

totally agree with the observations.

i'd like to add that for punting, if you cant choose between HK island (sheung wan/wanchai/causeway bay) or TST (TST/ TST E/Jordan), a good option is to stay at the 3 hotels at Pacific Place. it's right on top of admiralty MTR, and right in the middle of all the punting action, one stop to wanchai and TST, 2 stops to Jordan and CWB.

for me, i usually stay there as its the most centrally located and time efficient base for my punting

The negative would be that Admiralty is uniformly expensive.

I used to stay at the Conrad all the time, but the limited good food choices and inability to find a store to buy some basic drinks drove me crazy.

Nice rooms, but a little bit sterile I thought.  Good point on the MTR though, it's very central to all the lines.

This is one of those threads that's going to be big but useless, unless you narrow down your parameters.  You do know that HK probably has hundreds of hotels don't you?

For a first-timer, I'd probably recommend staying in TST as opposed to HK Island.  The mid-range hotels will probably be a bit cheaper and more selection, and it's much easier to navigate.  The HK side is more hilly and the distances between places are further.

Alright bro Taro......

How many days are you staying for...You could jump from one hotel to another..It just depends on what you have in mind for your holiday...

I personally book the hotels after looking at Sex141 girls databse.. Then book hotels accordingly...There are a lot of hotel bargains to be had in Hong Kong....

For transportation then i would recommend that you ask the hotel to send you a car...( Saves fagging about) And then taxi back to the airport...

Oh yeah...get yourself an octopus card as well...saves fagging about on the MTR plus most of the shops take the card as payment...

Happy Hunting bro....
