You do see some weird things in this world of ours...

I saw a documentary a while back about eating dogs in Korea - that really turned my stomach and I couldn't watch it to the end!

OMG - that is sick.

Kill to eat, yes.

But to deliberately eat something half-dead is just twisted.

The times I've seen that, the fish is lacerated diagonally and then quickly dipped in a deep fryer up to the gills.  The trick being to get the poor thing lightly fried and to the table quickly before the reflexes give up and it just lays there . . . not unlike the occasional HR girl

The whole point being that this is the epitome of "fresh."

It was recently reported in the SCMP like it was something new. But, yeah, other locals in HK have also since told me that it's nothing new. And everyone agrees that it's sick. The worst of it is that, now it's all over YouTube, there's been a lot of flaming of 'barbarian' Chinese people. Not good.

Tsk glass houses and stones, most people don't even know how their meat is produced, and yet are quick to point fingers at people. Take for example pork, you have British standard pork which is expensive but the pigs are kept in good conditons and can move around, it is 50% more expensive than non UK pork where pigs are put in horrendous conditions and ineffect tortured for years till they grow big enough for slaughter guess which one is more popular.

People often accuse Chinese and Asians of being barberous but they have never been in such situations themselves, if you look back in history cannibalism as recent as 1961 and 1954 was common place this was due to the great leap forward famine caused by the USSR and Mao. Westerners often think thats disgusting how can you eat your children.

Problem is China IS a land of famine between 425BC and 1850AD there has been a famine in one province of China every other year varying in intensity, this is documented in a book called China land of famine. When was the last time there was a famine in Europe or the USA? the last one in Europe was 1817.

The airplane crash in Alive showed this, people from a fairly modern progressive country turned to cannibalism because they were forced.

Yeah I'd thought it was a Japanese technique too, but that was just an assumption on my part I guess.

As for the Chinese?  Barbarians all of them . . . but we're giving them a run for the money!!   The 'modern' U.S. feedlot is about as tortuous as it gets, and polluting in a big way too.  Corporate animal husbandry may have brought prices down, but at an enormous cost to all of us and the animals too.

you know predators in nature "kill" things with their teeth and claws. prey often die very slowly and are painfully eaten alive practically.

I personally cant watch a lobster steamed to death much less eat a fish when it is still alive.

The line on the lobster thing is that they can't feel high temperatures (why would they evolve the capacity to feel boiling heat?  They don't all live next to volcanoes) and so the boiling just puts them to sleep.  What you're "feeling" when you watch a lobster boil is anthropromorphic; you're abscribing human feelings to something that doesn't have them.

That is of course if the "they can't feel boiling temperatures" thing is true . . . could be urban legend stuff for all I know!

No boiling acheives the same affect as cutting them apart while they are alive, come on are you guys even Chinese?.

Have you ever eaten prawns with the vein still in it? , the black veins are pretty gross eh which is why they hire people to peel prawns and devein them either by pulling carefully or cutting down the body to scrape it out.

In that when you subject a lobster to sudden sharp pain be it boiling water or using a cleaver to cut it in half or cut off its claw (you see this in chinese restaurants a fair bit busy ones anyway).

Making the lobster shit itself from sharp pain is essentially removing the black vein thingie from the lobster as it shits itself meaning when you cut it up the lobster meat isn't covered in lobster shit and it makes preparation much easier as you don't have to worry about lobster shit.

A lobster is a hell of a lot bigger than a prawn and the amount of shit is much more than you'd find in prawns.

So would you avoid the pre-fridge step?  Where you stick the thing in the fridge for a bit to put it to sleep before dunking it in the boiling water?  Or would that halt this auto-enema reaction that makes the lobster void itself?

Ah, the things one learns on a whore-board!

An interesting report on this.  The story is actually from 2005 and since then I think more organizations have gotten on the "Lobster Pain Bandwagon" (witness the invention of the lobster tazer).  However the fundamentalargument that lobsters have chain ganglia nervous systems and the inability to feel emotion (which some consider the dividing line between a response to pain versus a reflex response to stimuli) still exists.  Cut the lobster's head off and it will react exactly the same when you drop it in boiling water.
