Anyone interested to see how controversial prostitution remains in England, check out the comments in the CIF (Comment Is Free) section attached to the above article. The Guardian is a very liberal paper by English standards, however it is also a very feminist paper, in the sense that many of the staff and contributors are militantly feminist. I have always felt very sympathetic to the feminist cause when it comes to equal rights for women, but obviously I disagree with the very strong anti-prostitution bias that has always characterized the mainstream women's movement.
The above article deals with the Belle De Jour case of Dr Brooke Magnanti. Dr M has created a dilemma for the anti-prostitution people in that she is highly educated and claims to have enjoyed her work; whereas the anti-prostitution crowd want us all to believe that WGs are miserable victims sold into slavery.
Notice all the pro-prostitution comments from the English punters.
I have posted two comments to that thread, btw - tho under a different user name.
