I'm pretty tired of lugging around a 6 pound laptop, can someone recommend a good netbook that can be used to play some older games ?

Look out for an Acer Aspire One - go for the model with a proper hard disk, and install Windows on it. Was surprised to see it can run Halo and Grand Theft Auto Vice City without issues (on low graphics settings of course), plus others. Great screen on it, and nice and lightweight (even with a 9 cell battery bought separately, which gives about 6 hours use).

Quite cheap also - number of places do cheap reconditioned ones.

im not sure if bro dboy is saying the same thing but asus has the cheapest netbooks on the market right now. They also have a higher qualiy model which apparently is the slimmest notebook ever

if you are willing to pay sony netbooks are nicceeeee

i dont think netbooks are built to play games tho, not even old ones because the graphics card is just not powerful enuff yet

I have the Aspire one and love it.
It is not very good for games though because of the smaller keyboard and mouse.
Its only good for turn based games like Civilization IV.

I would buy the Samsung NC10 or the HP 2133, the other brands feels too plastic for my taste.

I was thinking of getting a netbook the other day actually but have been curious if it would be capable of running Photoshop and viewing full HD movies as well.

Would anyone know if these 2 will run smooth on a (any) netbook?

I have a HP 2140. I like it cos it's got a nice brushed aluminiun shell rather than the plasticky other ones. it's fine for me surfing and office work.

I think HP have just brought out a new version with HD capacity moniter.

i have a lenovo s10 and its too sluggish to run photoshop cs4 and i would not recommended it for playing 1080P movies for 2 reasons:

1) Screen resolution on netbooks are 1024 x 600 too small for any HD videos
2) the intel atom processor is not meant for heavy decoding nor or the video cards bundled with netbooks

But i love it for just taking it on the go and using it when i just need to browse the net or do some minor editing on word documents.

it's not just the graphics cards.  netbooks/laptops just get run down easily by games and such b/c the processors and RAM can't keep up.  it's like running bittorrent on them, though perhaps not as extreme.  just completely rapes them of their resources, and once they get slow you have no choice but to shutdown/reboot

Get the 11.6" Acer Aspire One

It's still really light, has a big keyboard (full size, I think), and that extra 1.6" screen gives you a screen resolution that's significantly easier to work with. And it still has a super long battery life.



I got the 10" Aspire One, and it's my traveling netboook. I"m thinking of upgrading to the 11.6" myself.

BTW, on my 10" Aspire One, first thing I did, was swap out the RAM to a 2 gig module, which made it zippy enough to run casual games.

The 11.6" Aspire One seems to come with 2 gigs of RAM, but it's running Vista.
You might want to check if you can get more RAM installed. (like a 4 gig module)

Is there anything in the pipeline that's coming out in the next little while that's worth waiting for ? Should I get it in North America or hold out until my sex vacation in HK ?

The newer netbooks will come with touch screens. Asus has launched the first, expect other manufacturers to follow.

Have tested Windows 7 on a netbook and is much better than XP.

Personally on the issue of netbooks, there is a new one that comes out every month, although Asus is currently leading the market and everyone else follows, so I would select them to be more preferential. As to where to buy electronics, HK is undoubtedly better due to the fact we do not have GST unlike the rest of the world, if you are to buy it in HK you would be best to head to the Wanchai Comp Centre or Sham Shui Po Golden Arcade... These are invariably the best places to get them at the cheapest costs, and the warranty is just the same. BTW Apple is said to be releasing a Tablet in September, might be worth waiting to take a look, who knows?

If you want a fully functional laptop that is super portable, get the macbook air. If performance is not a big issue and want it cheap, get a netbook but MAKE SURE you get one with as big of a keyboard as possible. I have the lenovo s10 and the keyboard is horrible. I actually hate using it.

I am sorry, but seriously recommending a MacBook Air? Sorry even if price wasn't of any significance (for the same price you can buy those sliim sleek looking viaos) I wouldn't describe the Air as 'fully functional' it is more like a Netbook and a half with the additional cost, it is defnitely not a worthwhile alternative, the point of a netbook is the travel and fucntionality usage. A standard Netbook comes with the Atom chip, which lowers power usage (long lasting batteries) and small compact form. The best netbooks to get are definitely in the 10.2" range, whereby the keyboards are generally at 92% if i remember correctly. The netbooks with the ideal keyboards in my opinion are either HP or Asus (the newest ones), the keyboards are usually well positioned and easy to type with, I am typing on mine at approximately 70wpm, which is ideal.

well, it all depends on your requirements and usage, right?  but in bro PhantomX's case, any Mac should be a no go.  he clearly stated he wanted to be able to play older games on whatever he gets, and unless you want to deal w/ the hassle of partitioning a Mac to run BootCamp or Parallels, you're not going to play shit on a Mac.  games are coded primarily for Windows OS, so considering a Mac is a waste of time.

well if you have time and money you could wait, there is a rumor of putting a dual core chip in the newer editions of netbooks. i might kill your battery so just make sure to get a 9 cell. don't remember what kind of graphic card is going to be in it.

not literally but the process of uninstalling XP/Vista and installing windows 7 is appprently extremely gruesome and not worth it? Howd u get it on urs bro?

I own a MacBook Air. From my experience it is a fully portable laptop, but not functional. Laptop gets soo much heat after 30min. intensive use. It is OK for surfing etc. but not for games or watching movies.
