So true if you are looking for the regulars. The regulars, local and expat are usually middle aged, civies, chubby/really fat, and will party all night. You should go after the tourists who drink there. At least most of them tend to be younger and in better shape. Better nights take place whenever a big trade exhibition is taking place at the nearby Exhibition Centre.

Yeah. Mes Amis is a great spot to find civvies out to party and have fun.

But keep in mind.., you still need to have some game just like anywhere else.  Yes, they tend to be"primed" to be seduced when partying there... but there are also a lot of other fellas trying to seduce them.

If they are a DH that has the ability to roam during the week, they are going to spend most of their time at the "sure thing" places because they are looking for money.  I have known a few over the last year that would work all day and then head to Wanchai for drinks or S.T. depending on the girl.  They make jack shit as a DH and many are treated as freaking slaves depending on which families they work for.

so i was there wed night unfortunately bumped into female colleague from same floor... was asked why i am there as she knows i am married..... lessons learnt stay away from social pub. found lot more offeringa at Joe banana and escape.

I've always wondered if it's possible to do the Wanchai bar scene as an expat resident and not get recognized by acquaintances. Since you just mentioned it and since Wander is already on the thread… How risky is it in that sense? If you stick to the punting bars, do you just resign yourself to the fact that you'll run into guys (but not gals) you know from time to time (how frequently?) and assume that word won't get back to the SO, or can you go for months on end and never see anyone you know? Anyone have any observations? I know it will depend on how many people you know, but if you've been living and working here for a while you're bound to know a bunch of people at least casually. The fact that you're all there for the same reason is less comforting if they're single and you're not.

I think punting bar is ok. but the trick is when you take her back you just gotta do it separately. Also 9-110pm is dangerous hours, the people are still scattered thus not crowded enough to hide. However post midnight the place was just a zoo, and mostly so drunk, so less likely to be noticed/remembered.

On HK island civis really have two places you can go to have drinks and listen to some good dancing music without being accosted by freelancers/dhs. You can go to a club/bar in LKF, occasionally pay door entrance, pay for expensive drinks, stand at the bar, and hope you can find a girl who doesn't mind dancing with a much older gentleman.

Or civis can go to Mes Amis/Dusk to Dawn to have drinks and listen to good djs or live bands at Dusk to Dawn. The drinks are very affordable, there is hardly a door charge, and the civi crowd is older. Because wanchai is so affordable, there are many female civis who like to go there too, but because so many places have a sleazy feel to it, they tend to congregate at places like Mes Amis and Dusk to Dawn which are really social bars with cheap drinks and great music to dance. These girls especially like Ladies night at Mes Amis because drinks are practically free until 1am or 2am (i forget). They don't have to depend on a guy to get drunk.

You should not have been embarrassed to see your female colleague in Mes Amis, instead you should asked her to join you for a dance and drink. Of course it may have been she who was more embarrassed because now she could not pick up a guy there with you there to witness it and you possibly gossiping about that ugly guy she snogged at the bar.

Yeah, I have bumped into my "real-life" friends in the WG-bars and although the initial reaction can be "holy shit!!!" it is actually almost never a problem in these bars themselves.  Civvie gals/spouses will NOT go there.  And both you and the guy freind you bumped into are both there for the same reason and you don't want it advertised.  Even single men don't want it known in their normal circle of friends/co-workers that they fuck hookers.  Everybody wants to protect their civilian reputation.  Some friends I met there ended up becoming punting partners -- good fun sharing our stories.

The real, super danger is the civvie bars mentioned -- Mes Amis, Dusk Till Dawn, Wanch, etc..  Bros bring their spouses there (I hate them for it!  keep Wanchai spouse-free!  hehe), or gaggles of civvie gals do a girls-nite-out at these places -- and these bars are not separated or isolated from the WG scene.  Mes Amis is almost beside Amazonia; Dusk till Dawn is a 60 second walk from Escape or Joe Bananas, etc.    And as everyone hangs out on the terraces out front being spotted by a friend of your spouse is a REAL danger.  If you are married then being seen semi-plastered walking between Joes and Amazonia late at nite is baaaaaad.  Everyone who sees you will think one thing.  And having that get back to your spouse is bad news indeed.

My rule in Wanchai was to stick to the pro WG bars -- and rush between them trying not to be spotted on the street.  Only if I was with a gang of mates watching rugby (ie:  a real, verifiable alibi) or something did I hover around these civvie places.
