Thai massage is very inexpensive in Thailand (as are all the other kinds of massage too) - like 400 Baht/hr (and that's before you negotiate -- could easily be half that on a slow day), which is like US$13.50.

But in terms of the differences in styles, wikipedia has a good overall comparison. It also has in-depth descriptions of Thai Massage and some others.

The quick summary: Thai massage, sometimes described as "yoga for lazy people", involved not only rubbing but a lot of joint moving and stretching. It is typically done clothed (wearing a loose smock and loose pants). A full Thai massage course typically takes 2 hours, and is wonderful. There are also interesting things that can be done with herbs, for example the "Thai balls massage" (which is not what you're thinking right now -- it uses large balls of herbs pressed into your body).

As for most other kinds of massage (Indonesian/Japanese/Chinese/Swedishetc.), I find they are all variations on a theme. The theme involves "kneading" the muscles and ligaments/tendons of the body, sometimes using an oil and sometimes not. One is usually naked, but covered by either a sheet or towel.

Wikipedia also has a completely inadequate section on erotic massage.

It is probably fair to say that in most of the erotic massage places we frequent, any non-Thai massage can be named whatever country the customer wants it to be named, but will still come out the same. Thai massage, because it is so different, is harder to impersonate.

Ok, I'm going to do my best here. twiceAweek - let me know if you think I've covered the bases:

Traditional Thai Massage - A stretching, clothed massage. Very nice. No sex whatsoever.

Thai Massage - As above, but in addition to the massage, you may or may not be offered sexual services ranging from HJ to boom boom. Just because it says "Thai Massage" doesn't mean anything about whether sexual services are included. Thailand has a long and noble tradition of massage that has absolutely nothing to do with sex. Separately, Thailand has a long and not quite so noble tradition of sex that has absolutely nothing to do with legitimate massage. Both are present in Thailand. They sometimes happen together, often not.

Hong Kong style massage - Some kind of massage plus HJ

Shanghai style massage - Some kind of massage. No HJ, This is true despite the fact that massage plus any kind of sex is widely available in Shanghai.

Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Swedish style massage - massage based on the massage culture in that country. Nothing to do with sex. Sex may or may not be offered, but it is nothing to do with the country name being touted.

Tantric massage - Massage of some kind plus HJ plus prostate massage (finger in rear, massaging your prostate -- people either love it or hate it. I love it).

In summary: "HK Style" seems to mean HJ. "Tantric Style" means HJ and prostate. Beyond that, nothing about the name indicates the presence or absence of any kind of sexual service.

Phew!

Thai massage can be experienced and viewed upon in 1 of 2 ways:

1. A good stretch of all your body at the cost of realizing there are muscles you never stretched before
2. someone going at it with your body like a playtoy

all in all, there is no sensual aspect to a thai massage if this is what the initial poster is looking for IMHO

On the mainland, where almost all massages include a HJ, the Thai and Japanese massages are usually the most expensive (not including a spa experience), followed by Chinese or various nonsense named massages.  Actually, I guess a Thai or Japanese massage includes a HJ.  Sometimes a Chinese massage will require negotiation in the room.

Anyway, a Chinese massage is usually dry, and a Thai or Japanese massage uses oil.  Japanese is usually softer, and if the girl knows how to do a Thai massage, there is usually some joint stretching involved.  In upscale places the rooms for Japanese and Thai massages are nicer than the Chinese massage rooms.  I often find that Japanese massage romms usually have a bed rather than a propper massage table.
