My Japanese experience punting?
Honest truth - it's limited. Most of my experiences in Japan were with actual GFs or hookups... I lived there quite a while and was younger (and thinner) then. If you live there, are young, single, not wholly unattractive, and put your mind to it, it's not so hard to get laid pretty frequently. Especially if you lower your expectations a bit. Just learn some Japanese, and spend some time in Roppongi. No shortage of free, easy girls there looking to slum it with a white guy so they can tell their friends and practice some English. And back then, I was dead fucking broke - so paying for it wasn't an option anyway.
Now I'm older and attached. So the options for cute women in bars being attracted to me w/o pay are... less, to say the least. (oooh, you're overweight, hair, *and* attached! Wait till I tell my friends!) And for the money, Japan is kinda a bum deal. You get a lot less for a lot more $$ there. And there's a lot of "oh, you can do THIS, but you can't do THAT"... which gets annoying as hell. And the odds of being fucked with by some guy who wants to say that you did something that you weren't aware costs more and that's 60,000 yen - and if you disagree, they are happy to call the cops and you can explain it to them (and your SO)...
After a few trips to a few places, I decided it largely wasn't worth the hassle. The thing is, the prices are steep there - for the price of getting laid well in a love hotel in Tokyo (~80,000 yen for the sex, 8,000 yen for the hotel) you can have 8K HKD to spend on a trip to HK... which I am told (above) is more han enough to have more sex than I am capable of for 4 days... Fuck, you can basically do nothing but sleep, eat, and fuck for a week in Manila, and have trouble burning through 88,000 yen in a week - hell, you can even stay at the Shangri-la while you're doing it for 30,000 yen a day... so if you travel a lot (and I do), you save it for when you are away.
BTW: I hear a lot of people complain about "no gaijin" rules in Japan - but the truth is, it's not that they don't *like* you, or don't want your money - it's that they have some really complex systems, and some of it is terribly expensive. They are sure that if they let a bunch of foreigners in who don't speak Japanese - they will get confused, do something weird, or not understand the payment scheme., This will cause a big hassle at the end of the night when the bill comes. They go through this a couple times, and they say "fuck it - this is more trouble than it's worth, no more foreigners!" - Sad but true.
Not the answer you wanted - but it's the truth.
EDIT: I'm maybe quoting on the high end on escorts in Japan to kinda prove a point. The current range can be much lower - I've heard as low as 30,000 yen... but never much below that - and that's 1 hour outcall with a pretty old Ukrainian or Filipina chick who is gonna be resistant to doing too much. Or maybe an hour-90min at a soapland with the girls nobody else wants... But again - my experience is limited, so I'm a poor guide - take what I say with a grain of salt.
