Recent Formal Study on WG STDs

Here's the abstract of this research.  I was really surprised at the very low incidences:

Abstract
OBJECTIVES:
Female sex workers (FSW) have been considered reservoirs and vectors of sexually transmitted infections (STI) in the community. This study estimated the prevalence of STI/human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among FSW of various migration and residential status in Hong Kong and identified possible risk factors.

METHODS:
An outreach "Well-women" clinic was set up at Ziteng, a non-governmental organization working with FSW. Details of their lifestyle and health risk behavior were gathered before screening tests were performed, and the data were analyzed according to their place of origin.

RESULTS:
A total of 503 FSW were screened for STI/HIV between 2005 and 2007. Syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV accounted for 1.8, 1.8, 4.6, and 0.2%, respectively. After adjusting for confounders, having ≥ 2 sexual partners (odds ratio [OR] 8.33, 95%CI: 2.17-33.46), residence status (OR 0.38, 95%CI: 0.17-0.89), and daily frequency of douching (OR 3.02, 95%CI: 1.23-7.35) were identified as significant predictors.

CONCLUSIONS:
This study provides important insights on the screening and associated risk factors of STI among FSW working in Hong Kong. The contextual factors identified reflect the social and geographical context in which these women are operating and how they protect their health using their own means. These findings encourage policymakers and health professionals to redirect their focus and resources to a more holistic approach to sexual health when planning and implementing effective STI/HIV prevention programs.

This is really encouraging and such a formal study really provides extra security for your health when making a punt. However, I think we must not take these low infection rates for granted and continue to practice safe sex at all times.

Those infection rates seem lower than what I would expect. I don't know how reliable this is really given the study sample they selected, I would guess only healthy and neat WG would like to take part in the study.

Another study from the same website, but this one is more alarming, and unfortunately I guess it can be more generalizable.

Variations in condom use by locale: a comparison of mobile Chinese female sex workers in Hong Kong and mainland China.

The present study investigated the prevalence of HIV and HIV-related behaviors and perceptions among 336 female sex workers (FSW) traveling from mainland China to work in Hong Kong. None of the participants tested HIV positive. Of the participants, 13.2% and 26.8%, respectively, would have unprotected sex with a client in Hong Kong or in mainland China if they liked the client; 16.7% and 21.7%, respectively, would have unprotected sex with a client in Hong Kong and in mainland China if he paid more. Of the participants, 98.5% used condoms in the last episode of sex work in Hong Kong and 78.1% were consistent condom users in Hong Kong in the last month. Yet, among those who previously worked as FSW in mainland China (n = 141), only 28.6% used condoms consistently in mainland China in the last year; 60% of those who used condoms inconsistently while in mainland China became consistent condom users in Hong Kong. Among those who did not use condoms in mainland China, willingness to have unprotected sex with a client who was liked by the FSW was a strong predictor for consistent condom use in Hong Kong (OR = 18.67, p < .001). Among those who were consistent condom users in Hong Kong, the same variable predicted inconsistent condom use while in mainland China (OR = 14.02, p < .05). Condom use behaviors change when FSW are working in different social contexts and behavioral changes are possible. Education programs should take socio-contextual factors into account.

Note that the study was done in 2007

This doesn't change much. You can take the risk or not take the risk. Knowing the stats and taking the risk doesn't lower your chances of catching anything.
My advice is always wear a dom.

True words bro robotto, but what is alarming in the study bro marcopo highlights is the amount of WGs willing to neglect the consistent use of condom under certain circumstances. It just goes to show there must actually be a viable market for this. My personal expectations were that STDs rates would generally be much higher. I had read an article in newspaper a long time ago that quoted a doctor saying almost half of WGs in HK have some form of STD at some point (anybody remember this? please do not flame me if I remembered wrongly) - but that's just one man's opinion it seems. I think if there is better sex education in china then these stats would become world class.

500 is a decent sample size, I guess it comes down to what the bias...

So 1 had HIV

Glad to hear the numbers are so low.

My std doc said he was participating in a study for HK health authority with a bunch of other std docs about a year ago.  He said they tested WG from Wan Chai, walkups and others.  The sample size for that was large also.  He said that 20% of the PRC had syph with the problem being they never get checked.  While SE Asians rarely had syph but 20% of the time had C.

Also add to the mix the more he scares the shit out of me, the more I get checked and pay him money...

Yeah 503 is plenty big for a sample size.  The tested group was made up of girls who voluntarily went to the clinic to be tested, so it's possible that the responsible ones (that always used condoms) were self-selecting and biasing the results.

BCS, I've had my docs in the past throw around all kinds of numbers too.  I've come to the conclusion that they're just making them up.  I remember one doc stating that 90-95% of all sex workers had HIV.  Clearly wrong.

One of the things that makes it difficult to discern the truth is how professionals talk about "STDs", for the study above they're just testing for the big stuff, but of course most docs also include HPV, HSV, Hep B, C and all in the list of STDs, and so the numberof people carry an "STD" naturally goes up.  The most common example of this is an oft quoted statement that '80+% of the population has HSV (herpes).'  Well there's a zillion kinds of HSV (including the version that causes chicken pox and shingles) and so not every strain is a sexually transmitted herpes infection.  Scare tactic versions of disease reporting like this make the statistics meaningless and useless.

Anyway, I didn't post this to encourage any BB behavior, just posted it as a resource.  Always play safe and always wrap that weiner!!

I found this statement on Wikipedia in an article on prostitution in Canada:

"A study was reported as showing that 26% of Vancouver's female sex workers were infected with HIV".

I think if Vancouver's rate is 26% (which sounds high), then Hong Kong's rate should at least be higher than that quoted in the study.  It's probably a result of the HK study being voluntary.

I think it has more to do with drugs as a reason for being in prostitution. The HK/China WGs are generally not addicted to crack or heroin...

Yes its not only the sample size but also the sample quality is very much an issue here. If you get your sample from some ex-prositutes rescued trafficking girls health clinic then no doubt the STD rate would be higher. So, lets not get into the trap of comparing percentages. Btw, any link to that Vancouvar study?

0.2% have HIV? doesnt that means there's one somewhere out there
1% of 500 = 5

Those are low, were there of all nationalities or just local HK WGs? I would assume the non-local WGs are harder to reach and have them to take part of a study.

which means if your count has reached several hundred then there is a very good chance statisically that you have been exposed atleast once...........

Whoever heard of a FSW who has <2 sex partners?  Haha.

It's not clear what's meant by the odds ratios presented for higher risk WGs.
Certainly, a girl who has more clients, is not an HK resident, and douches every day is more
likely to be amongst the ~40 girls who tested positive for one of those four STDs (assuming minimal overlap).

What does that mean for us?  If you want to avoid STDs, pick the ugly local girl who doesn't clean her pussy!  The hygienic mainlander hottie will be the higher risk prospect.

NOW regarding the study over condom use.

First let's agree that the sample (mainlander whores who make it to hk) selects for their prospects of success.  They are on average prettier, harder working, or more resourceful to have come to ply their wares in cosmopolitan, wealthy Hong Kong.

It says of the 336 chinese whores, only 195 solicited in HK.  These would be the "good" girls. These are the non-career sluts who return to China for school or try to build a "legit" career.  The remaining 141 solicited in both HK and mainland, and are likely to be "career" whores.

NOW, consider that when transacting in the mainalnd 5/7 of these chicks (about 100 girls out of 141) do not subscribe to the "always wear a condom" mantra that we do.

Of these 100 "bad" girls, the study says 60 will consistently use condoms in HK.  My interpretation of this is that the HK clients insist on the condom, not the girls.  An alternative interp is that the 60 think HK guys are somehow "dirtier" than their mainlander counterparts, but this seems unlikely.  Forty of the 100 "bad" girls did not insist on condoms either in mainland or HK.  These could be the fugly drug-users who attract high-risk clients in HK.  Again, I feel condom use is largely driven by the man here.

The abstract seems to find it remarkable that the GFE providers, i.e., the girls willing to have unprotected sex with a client they "like", always use a condom in the HK.  The contrapositive is that girls who do NOT use a condom in HK would NOT be willing to have unprotected sex with a client they "like."  Then are they not using a condom because they "hate" the client?  I think all we're seeing is that HK men insist on a condom... and mainlanders don't.  Full stop.

That was a very funny restatement of a dry research paper!   "100 girls out of 141"  "non-career sluts" and "good" girls.  Too damn funny!

Too bad the only safe fuck is with the ugly local girl with the dirty pussy . . .

Figures don't lie, but liars can figure... and this study leaves us all plenty of play to figure!

I think that there is all sorts of problems of methodology, most significantly that this was an opt in study, and as a result doesn't really hit a cross section of sex workers.  This is of particular interest to many of the people here, considering that many of the hotel girls that are most popular are incredibly transient, often in from the Mainland for a couple of weeks and shipped back all fucked out and done.

I would guess that what you saw in the sample group is the longer term walkup pros, maybe some street walkers.  These would be girls who have been doing it a long time, have learned to take care of themelves, and as a result, in that sample of 500+ girls, you have 20 infected with something nasty, and a similar amount of chlamydia, so 40 girls out of 500 with an issue.

The only rate that seems out of line is the chlamydia, which seems to be about 10 times the normal rate for the overall population.  But even then, it's a pretty darn low rate, and the symptoms are mostly there for the women than the men.

Best news of all?  With use of condoms almost all of this stuff is entirely avoidable, even if you happen to hit a provider who has something.  Transmission rates for chlamydia is only 30-50% on an unprotected sex act, and once you cover up, you are looking at maybe 1 in 100 (breakage, leakage, falling off).  So you have a 40 in 500 chance of hitting an infected girl, a 50% of transmission, and a 1 in 100 chance of the condom failing in a manner that woudl expose you.  0.04% chance.  Nice!

Now, if you go unprotected, you get the 30-50% chance against 40 out of 500,  so about a 4% chance.  100 times worse without the cover, and that doesn't allow for the idea that a girl who will do it with you without the cover likely has with others, upping that 4% chance a whole bunch.

So don't be silly, cover you willie!

Shit.  All this talk of STIs makes me seriously consider discontinuing my mongering.

The risks may not be high but the consequences of an incident are near catastrophic.

Sad really--I never reached RA30.  Ahh, what might have been. . .

As long you dont do BB of any sorts and no DFK, you are very safe. But that takes away fun stuff like DATY, unprotected 69, BB-BJ. Some take the risk and do full sex BB. The temptation can be big when you are the in the moment, and the girl is begging you do her BB. I never can resist going BB, DATY, 69 on Civies.

To be honest, if you are going to punt you will risk contracting something someday! As long as its not something deadly or incurable, I'm fine with it. If u think about it, how many guys bang the WG before you.
Best is not to think about it as you are going to punt anyway, just be safe when you are punting! Always use a condom regardless! Better be safe then sorry right!
