When mongering, keep your midbrain active all the time
It's that brain that gets most of us into this in the first place
What you're saying makes total sense though. The idea that we often do something dangerous, not because we ignore our instincts but because we're frightened of other emotions (guilt, shames, embarrassment etc.) coming into play.
I once knocked on a door and the girl on the other side was amazing (without exaggeration) - amazing body, tall, slim with not an ounce of fat, very very pretty face. She looked like a real-life anime girl. However, I asked her the prices I scanned her up and down and immediately I started seeing signs of someone who really didn't take care of themselves. Very tired-looking face with no-one-at-home eyes, odd posture and just looking generally unwell. I made the decision to make my excuses (politely and apologetically) and leave her.
On reflection she might've just had a cold or something but there was something 'off' about her and I didn't want to take any risk.
