Drug Resistant Clap

http://www.reuters.com/article/2 ... USTRE76A0YO20110711

Interesting discovery out of Japan relating to a new superbug strain of gonorrhoea that is resistant to all known treatments.    I'm sure they'll figure out a multi-antibiotic cocktail to fight it but shit, it used to be such an easy fix. 1g of Azithromycin and you were good to go!

The other interesting thing about the article was in paragraph six:

""Japan has historically been the place for the first emergence and subsequent global spread of different types of resistance in gonorrhea," that's counterintuitive. You wouldn't think that a developed country would be the source of new strains.

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.

Well, if you think about it, developed countries are the ones rich enough to have antibiotics. And when you have money and antibiotics, people will always abuse their use. New strains arise because they mutate in order to survive. It is because we abuse using antibiotics that drug resistant strains appear and we need to find new ways to fight them.

Whereas in the poorer countries, the existing strains probably do not face the antibiotics as much because they are too poor to have them and so the strains have no need to mutate as they don't need to fight.

butler I am totally not surprised.  My brother was working in tokyo back in the dot com boom as an assoiate at an investment bank. he described those 5 years as the most draining period of his life. work aside, he said he'd never shagged that many girls in his life. now we ain't  aryan blue eyed blonds,  ABCs and still shagging like rabbits!  He said 40% of the chicks he shagged would not be willing to rubber up. The preference of the japanese girl who was a fwb was to go bareback.  feels better they say. My brother has probably had more antibiotics shot up his ass cheek than the whole africa given they number of times he got hit with chlamydia or ghonorrea.

Japan has traditionally had the highest rates of gonorrhea in the world, industrialized or not.

The reasons why are cultural, as daik35 points out above (my experiences there also was that the default mode was without condom).

Interesting that low condom usage would drive higher gonorrhea rates in a community with ready access to antibiotics.  For instance, the U.S. in the 60's, 70's and 80's which were all low condom decades, didn't suffer the same fate.  It wasn't until AIDs in the late 80's that the U.S. got religion on using condoms.

I would guess that the higher incidence in Japan isn't because people lack access to antibiotics and healthcare, but because they're fucking like rabbits?  If, for example, you have a new sex partner every night then even if you have Dick Cheney's medical team following you around you're going to infect a dozen other people before you start showing symptoms.

Either that or, theory #2, the Japanese have an unusually high incidence of asymptomatic infections?
