Question about tips in HK

Ok, in Canada I tipped if I like her and the service was above average ($20-$40CDN).  Now since my inception to China tipping is not SOP.  It's actually frowned upon and more often in the higher end establishments.

I brought a small gift for one 'cuz I knew it was her birthday.  I'm a regular there and the manager starts giving me a hard time.  I was like WTF?  If I want to waste some money on her that's MY BUSINESS!   He could tell I was pissed-off and tries to tell me it's for my own protection.  I'm like "What?"  He said he's afraid the girls will start asking me (and then other clients to buy them things).  I believed him because he was more concerned if she asked me to buy her something (she did not).  In the end he said it's ok to give her the gift, but to please not do it again.  He mentioned if I like a girl just see her again.  In hind-sight this makes sense.  Management is there to protect us.  If the girl is good she clears an easy $30,000RMB+ a month.  That's a lot for someone with zero education and living in China (for reference my secretary with a university degree makes 3000RMB/month).

There's also well known R&T place in Shanghai called Peacock.  It used to be a decent play to get an oil massage + hand release.  $200 Massage + $100 "tip" = $300RMB.  It was ok, until a lot of foreigners started going there and tipping the girls $200RMB+ not knowing better.  So now it's $400RMB for a Massage/HJ.  If you throw in another hundred you can hit some of the saunas in SH.  Therein lies the problem.  People stopped going because the girls felt entitled to the $200RMB "tip" regardless if they deserved it or not.  I'm not even going to go into them short-changing customers time...

Anyways, totally off track to my question.  How do tips work in HK?  Is it like North American restaurants where you're expected to tip minimum 15% for lunch, 20% for dinner? (The waitress might as well eat with me).

Thanks in advance and if anyone's curious about how the Saunas in Shanghai operate let me know.  I can make a more detailed post about how the girls get trained, fined, working schedules, etc.

I think tips is not necessary in HK. Because when you go out for dinner they usually charge you 10% service money. I think they call it plus one .

When i go eat with HK friends and i pay the bill with some tip they usually tell me it is a wast of money.

Conclusion just save your tip and do something nice with you tip.

I believe that tipping in China will actually make the establishment lose it's credentials if girls start expecting it and people will go elsewhere.  I was told by a friend to NOT tip and get every dollar back in change.  200 for the girl 168 for the room, and expect 32 bucks back on 400 paid.  32 rmb is less than 5 USD, really doesn't mean much when one is mongering with US dollars in mind and US WG prices in hand but there has to be a good reason.  I have seen it happen in NYC where a regular rub and tug place is 40 house and 20 tip normally, until some greedy bitches started asking for 30 tip and the expected norm change a bit.  They went out of business because people started going to another place where the tip was an expected 20, not because they are so cheap that they could not afford the extra 10 bucks, but because of the principle and feeling ripped off.

Restaurant ....I don;t tips nowaday. Bad economy. Unlike north America, it is not a Must to tip in HK.

The last I understand is that all the tips goes to company instead of the waiters/waitresses chinese in most of the Chinese restaurants....so why tips?

Working Girls

Thanks for the responses.  I apologise as I wasn't clear as to the venue in my question.

In all my examples above save the last the places were pooning spots.

What I meant was how do "tips" for WGs work in HK?  I see a lot of reports with bros tipping $100HKD-$200HKD, when the price is not much higher than that.

We have had some past threads on this subject, but from my persepective I only tip when I have got really good service from the WG - not run of the mill - htats what is included in the base price.  You're right about the amount though it can vary.  If the WG is $800 then I might drop another $100 or $200 if she has been exceptional.  I think it is personal preference. Although in Thailand they tend to ask for a tip I have never encountered that in the HK scene.  Maybe some of the other bros can correct me if I'm wrong.

Isn't it a face issue ? , in that my dad tips heavily as a matter of face, I tip only if I feel they are worth it rather than an automatic tip.
