#1 Post at 1-9-2010 12:22  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L banning cantonese programs iin Guangzhou i thought China was receptive toward cantonese that has flourished over decades compared to 50 years of history of communist china.  Why would the government officials be so naive to think banning Cantonese tv programs to promote Asian games and strictly mandarin? i was excited about the language of mandarin and was interested in learning it. now this seems absurd and i am beginning to have seconds thoughts of because how inappropriate the proposals by government officials towards language. They play favorism on official dialect mandarin over the other. If it weren't for Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen, Taiwan, Guangzhou... for their economic base and chinese unity and contributions. It would be terrible strategy to alienate so many members of the Chinese diaspora by attacking their language. I think people in the Chinese forum saying that mainly because many people in there don't know English well, so this is why they just use Chinese to communicate.

As a cantonese speaker it really upsets me that they feel like they need to do this. Cantonese is the language of Guangzhou and they shouold respect that. The purpose of doing this for the Asian games. I do  not think switching to mandarin will help them promote the sport at all. I think leaving the Cantonese and showing the area the way it is naturally is a better way to promote themselves.

Why don't they ban Shanghainese from being spoken in Shanghai? and same goes for the hundreds of other dialects all over the country! I generally support the govt because it usually has some sort of reasoning, even if it is cruel to some. However this one just completely boggles my mind.

I won't be surprised 20-30 years later, young generation of cantonese people might be don't know how to speak cantonese too if we don't keep promoting cantonese.

The case of cantonese may be different in that there is a much larger population which includes the entire Guangdong province, HK, some parts of Guangxi, and probably others which I don't know. That could amount to a decent % of the entire population of china. The political power in the north has always made Guangdong 2nd place in its decisions, but this is definitely going too far!

#12 Post at 9-9-2010 01:39  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Getting rid of Canto is kinda crazy.  I dont think it can ever happen as long as HK/Guanzhou region is prosperous and there's a vibrant media/cultural/art scene - be it with TV, movies, art, etc.  If some of the smaller European countries can hold on to their languages, how can we not hold on to Cantonese.  I'm sure there are a lot more people speaking Cantonese than Czech or Polish!
