Thinking about booking a HG. I see many are in TST which is convenient for me.

Are the hotels used nice reputable places? The reason I ask is  wouldn't want to be seen walking out of one of those 2 hour places. If I saw someone I know, I wouldn't have a leg to stand on. At least in a nice hotel I could perhaps say I was looking to book a room for a visiting friend/relative. If anyone has any better excuses I'm all ears.

I know it sounds overly cautious but chance meetings  CAN and DO happen often (in my experience anyway):

My friend here in HK was walking down nathan rd and bumped into an old classmate from the UK.
I once met a girl in Shanghai who went on holiday to Yunnan and met a 'good looking foreigner' from a famous US university - checked facebook, and lo and behold my old friend was on a study tour of China and in his pics was this girl! This in a country of 1.4 billion people!

In Hong Kong I often meet/see people I know in the most unlikely places - just want to be prepared. At least the rain today means I can use an Umbrella to hide my face!

yes, the hotels are all decent, tourist hotels. its probably safer than going to walk ups and probably the most discrete way fora local to monger.

Buy a SARS mask. People still "occasionally" wear them to avoid pollution or if they have a cold. You'll look like a bit of a dick but you'll be an anonymous dick so who cares.

If you read the reports of HG's then you will get a feel for how discreet things are. From what I have learnt, its only as discreet as you make it. You could either wait outside the hotel wearing a "I AM VISITNG PROSTITUTES" t-shirt or you could wait in a corner fiddling with your cellphone and spot/lead the girl through eye contact - The only time your discreetness is busted in this case is if the HG turns out to be your friend from the study tour

keep walking, don't look around, don't answer anybody you don't want to talk.

don't wear cloth too special.

phone off or leave somewhere.

there's lots of possibility that recognized wrong person.

if someone asked you later, told him/her you are sleeping at that time.

That's why sometimes it is good to have mongering buddies. U go together and if you run into someone it doesn't look as suspicious since you are not alone.

Sent - you make a good point about buddies, don't think any of my close friends would admit to the habit though...

The problem with buddies is they could flip on you 10 years later.  You know how any relationship goes, maybe you have a fight about _____ so he announces to the world you see hookers.  Maybe he becomes an evangelical christian or joings the repubelican party.  Who knows?

I've seen the masks used in China, many of them with special pictures or designs painted on them and not fitting particularly well to the point they wouldn't actually protect you from any microbes.

My question is the only people I ever saw wearing them were asian. I'm thinking if a caucasian were to walk around wearing a mask he might actually attract more attention rather than less.

Bro, I'm from AUS like you so I would never do it. I have my game plan and it's smooth so far so good. However, who cares if you attract attention wearing a mask? People may think "what a weirdo?" But since they don't know who the weirdo is, who cares? Walk around the corner, rip the mask off and away you go. You still see people in HK wearing these masks although it is much less common now.

I wouldn't do it either just because I've never ever (in many years living and travelling in asia) seen a gweilo wearing a mask inthe street, but then again it's not like anyones actually going to rip it off your face, but the same could be said for a plastic bag with eye holes I guess! Anyway after my HG experience i'm not overly worried as it seemed pretty safe to me (touchwood!)
