place to live.............

If you had $1Million dollars USD not HKD and one place to live in for the rest of your entire life, where would it be? narrow it down to a specific city if possible, like Macau, HK, Shenzhen etc. or a certain area. For me, I would choose Macau because you've got everything within easy reach. HK is an hour's ride away, Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Zhongshan all of china is within reach, and gambling is allowed in Macau as well as gorgeous babes. What else could anyone ask for?

You make a convincing argument; however, I would have to choose "Hong Kong". I really wanted to choose "Whistler, BC" but there's no snow year round, no beautiful Chinese WG's, or ambient amounts of food.

I doubt $1 million US would be enough to buy those typical posh homes in Whistler now

that's why I only made it $1M, otherwise you can go to the most expensive luxurious places but with $1M, you really need to make a hard decision. It's not that much money but it aint chump change either. Also, HK is still a good place cause it's pretty much like Macau, lots of accessable cities from there. Food is good, women are gorgeous, everything is cheap besides housing and life is good.

How long do you really think it'll last?

Also, tell me - every time you loose HK$8,000 you gonna get into another spot of trouble?

Muahahaha!!

Definitely Singapore! Despite the heat, it's such an easy, clean, and centrally located place to live (for access to different parts of SE Asia, especially Thailand!). People are really nice there, drivers yield for pedestrians and follow the road rules, and the food is off the charts! Now for the mongering-- everything is available there from bar scenes (Orchard Towers, et al) to the fairly discreet and legal area of Geylang. Some of the hottest WG's in my Asian punting career have been done in Singapore. I also love the mostly harmonius multi-culturalism of the place.

I think, place for "Living" and place for.. hmm.. "Adventure" must be different.
But as the condition was - only one place - it seems to me ( according to reports ) - that HongKong more preferable.

nice, never thought of singapore as a place that I would want to live in for the rest of my life. Never been there but the caning law scares me to death. I am afraid if I jaywalk across the street which I do on a daily basis would get me caned to death.

I would probably say Singapore, having lived there for almost a year.  Now granted, it was on the company's dime and I stayed where the expats lived, so perhaps things might be different if I were to live there on my dime.

Having said that, I think where I live, in the San Francisco Bay Area, is quite outstanding, though $1 million dollars in a great neighborhood doesn't buy you much.  To wit - I bought my house for a bit over $1 million US a few years ago, and let me tell you, there is absolutely nothing special about it at all, and the living area is less than 200 square meters (less than 2,000 square feet).  You pay a 25% premium for a great school district.

I do have a house in SZ and thinking about buying a place in Tangxia right by the Goodview Hotel for retirement purposes.  Too fucking hot and humid there though in the summer, especially with the lake nearby, shitloads of mosquitoes.  However, I'd probably get used to it after a while, just like I did in Singapore.

where in San Franciso? let me guess, Sunset district eh. And yes San Francisco is a nice place to live but it's just too damn expensive. Are you renting out the house in SZ while you are not there. You could make some extra cash if you rent it out like to me?

no not Sunset, though the wife does have her house nearby, which is now rented out.  Thank god the in-laws moved back to SZ, that was a big loss of income all these years of having that house just for them.  I live in the Silicon Valley part of the Bay Area.  The place that we have in SZ is rented out now, but quite frankly it's a dumpy place.  Much of Luohu is dumpy actually, since it's older, compared to say Futian and Nanshan.  The location is great though for mongering, about 1km away from Hooker Alley right by the JinPeng Hotel and the McDonalds.

Well, you can look at it another way. Each time he loses $8000,  emotionally he is mad enough and have a reason he can fuck 3 girls in 3 hours. There is no way I can do 3 girls in 3 hours.

bro you're in dreamland - $1mio is nowhere near enough ...

Even CFAs and Wealth Managers are saying you need at least $3m as a retirement pot these days, AND THAT IS AT THE AGE OF 65 (best case: 55)

do the math.  With just $1m you'd be back at work in 5 to 10 years max even if you're careful, unless you're willing to make major sacrifices in quality of life / personal security / healthcare / options available to you.

Now, $1m PER YEAR for the rest of my life might just make it ... in which case I'd definitely pick Hong Kong.

Come to that, there's no "would" about it ... I already did.

I would choose Costa Rica, a million dollars will go a long way there.

Sorry about my ignorance but I thought it was expensive to live in Hong Kong?
I know from friends from Hong Kong that it is more expensive to live in Hong Kong
then Vancouver and I know it's harding now to keep up the lifestyle I have been
living the past few years. It's getting expensive!!

Actually, 1 million USD to retire is enough if you live in a 3rd world country.  For HK and Macau, I don't think so, it too expensive.
