I'm curious what type of jobs are available for expats wanting to live in HK?

How about being an English teacher, heard it pays a lot and hours are very reasonable especially in HK. or you can check out foreignHR.com it's a website that helps expats find work in China and HK. These are not janitoring jobs either, but high pay professional jobs. Good luck

despite what others said in one of the other threads on English teaching jobs, I don't believe it is as high paying as they say it is.  

The most on-demand jobs for expats is still in the managerial field, at an international company, especially in the finance sector for HK.  For China (SZ/DG), manufacturing managerial expertise is the ticket.

when I mean high paying, I am saying that it is relative to where you live. I think the average yearly pay for a HK person is $20K/per year in USD. A teaching job pays $30K/year USD. That's a 50% increase, damn good in my opinion. And you dont work 40  hour weeks like people in the IT field or managing field either. Some of those guys work 60 hour weeks and they go nuts.

For the teaching job, do you need to know how to speak cantoneese or mandarin?  Do they have a contract clause no punting if on the job or something like that?   Are the teaching jobs with the private sector?

if you can speak canto ... you can get a job at any store.. for example sales
but if you can speak and write fluently a foreign language.. teaching is awesomeee aka gangster money

nope, as long as you speak english and have an english degree. I think in HK you might need to have teaching experience as well but not that much.

You need to consider Hong Kong is one of the most expensive places to live world, if you compare cost of living.  To live comfortably, you need to make some good money. The cost of living is as bad as living in New York. Rent will be expensive and takes the majority of your income, unless you move further out into the New Territory.

Teaching jobs are not easy to come by.

If you want to work for a decent school , you need to be HIGHLY qualified, with the jobs apocalypse going on in Europe and North America, gone are the days when a degree some work experience and born in UK/US/Can/Aus and get an english teaching job. There are several international schools I found. The base line is degree, work exp, and post grad something like PGCE or PGDE.

If you want to work for a not so good school, then quite simply you need to be WHITE, I found that there is almost no other qualification needed if you work in a not so good school. My wanderings around the NT I saw the odd white person daily, I never used to see so many white people in Tai Po, Yeun Long and Fanling.In such dodgy schools I found polish, russians and eastern Europeans who couldn't string a sentence together for shit.



If you want to get on the PNET scheme its unofficial but you need a PGCE / PGDE + 2 years experience , namely as the PNET scheme is so heavily over subscribed they had to put some shit filters up. Also you have to take 5 government tests on your linguistic ability which are easy for a native.


Also HK employers WILL check, unlike our friends north of the border.



The schools know that Europe/ North America are absolutely fooked economically and thus there is an influx of people looking for work, so they can pick and choose at a whim, in the old days folks would not want to venture north of Lion Rock, but now all the NT is full of english teachers.

yeah, I know what you mean. There are tons of Caucasians in HK and some of them hvae real experience but most do not. But I am sure these dodgy schools just want a white face so the kids parents can see that "hey there is a white teacher in teh school" so I'll send my kid there to learn english. And I agree with  you that some of these teacehrs are from Poland, Russia etc that can't even speak the language properly but they're white ie non-Asian.

First thing first - you cannot just come to Hong Kong on your tourist visa or visa free entry and take on employment.

This is illegal and there are grave consequences for BOTH the employee as well as the employer if caught. And they do do immigration sweeps regularly in Hong Kong.

For anybody to hire on a non-resident, he must  prove not only that his business can afford to do such hiring (company financials, history etc), but that he has taken steps to make sure that there are no locals who can do the job (special skills, record of past recruitment ads/head hnters for post etc).

I know of 3 people in HK who work on tourist visas, they just go to Macau every 179 days, as they are Laowais they never get stopped by cops or swept up by immigration.

Cops profile its the law, heh I've seen them in TST in that they hang around bus stops, somebody says bus in Mandarin "gung gun cheih" , instead of barsee they get stopped and searched.

The NET (Native English Teachers) are usually hired from abroad and thus all the paperwork is done for them and so that the teacher is granted a working permit (contract length varies).

However, with other jobs, companies are unlikely to go through all the hassle to get you a work permit.

For ones with dual nationality and have HKID cards then this is a different case. If your card says that you have 'right of abode' then you can work and live in HK all your life and no one will kick you out. On the card itself theres a code, you need an 'A'. Companies will see your status just like any other local.

I know that there's loads of 'em in the States etc - but is this the kind of life anybody (especially those from countries where the standard of living is acceptable) LIKES to lead?

Yep, exactly.

I experienced the exact same reverse-racism a while back when teaching english in taiwan.
Same attitude exists throughout all those english schools in asia.
Actually, its more of the parents who want to see a white face, rather than the school.
The school could care less, actually it probably prefers a bilingual asian guy so communication is easier.

But the customer is always right and you gotta meet the demand..... so white face it is.

I speak fluent English and have a knack for teaching but no degree.  Would I have a shot at teaching?   I know in Thailand if you do not have any experience they offer a
course for teaching English and then hire you on the spot.

You mean TESOL/TESL/TEFOL ...?  i know I was accepted for teaching in Taipei w/o a Degree.. but i rejected it aftering visiting there.. its so.. boring...

depends on where you go. Some places and schools require a TESOL, while others do not. As long as you're white, you'll most likely get hired. If you're Asian, you need lots of shit

Orwell in the book A Clergy Man's daughter had a similar situation, however I've come to the conclusion fuck'em, if the parents are strong in their belief that a taxi driver from the US or a white russian is far more qualified than a properly qualified person then they make their choice and they lay their children in it.
