Anybody see the movie Avatar?

I heard this is the biggest grossing movie since Titanic.  Anybody seen the movie?  I suspect the number about the movie are false, as I never seen this movie.   They say
the computer animated other creatures in the movie was interesting.

Last I read it was trailing titanic by $2 million dollars. They should surpass titanic in several days and will be the highest grossing film in history. Yeah I saw it, it was a big fucking waste of time. The only thing good about it is the CG graphics, but teh story line is blah blah. Once you see the graphics, you'll be amazed but teh story just doesn't capture you. So I give it a thumbs down. In China, the tickets are supposed to be 3 times as expensive as the US

Well I enjoyed it, and so did my family and most people I know who saw it.

There's still a lot of sessions showing here in Australia, a month after release, and that's unusual - most movies start to die down after a few weeks, so that's a sign that it really is doing well.  Me, I hope to see it again before it finishes, because I'll never get that experience again once it's only on the small screen.  I guess there are lot of people with the same idea.

By the way, I heard it had been banned in China, because it encourages rebellion or some such?  Anyone know if that's true?

It's okay. Kinda reminds me of Dances with wolves with aliens. You have to see it in 3D though.

Well, according to IMDB, Avatar just overtook Titanic to take the no.1 spot for the worldwide box office grossing movie of all-time.
http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/alltimegross?region=world-wide

I actually want to see it in IMAX 3D, but it seems for the next few weeks, the best seats are all taken already and I'm not going to pay $160 for crappy seats.

I don't think its banned per se in China. I don't know the full story, but I think they took down the 2D version only, so only the 3D version is showing now.

It is another movie that show the human destroy the nature for money and think that they have not made any mistake.
This is never their fault as we have requested them to move.

Avatar and Pocahontas:

The movie is visually stunning.  James Cameron writes horrible dialog.  I got drunk and passed out half way through the movie.

Bro Angst is right. It's not banned here in China. They just removed the 2D version to make room in theatres to start showing the new Chinese movie Confucius. The 3D version of Avatar is still here in both regular theaters and Imax. I can't verify the cost being 3x as much as the US, however, since I saw it in the States. I paid $15 to see it in 3D in the States, so it would seem rather ridiculous for the Chinese to charge the equivalent of $45 (300+ RMB)! Most Chinese wouldn't be able to afford that. Also, in the States you can walk away with the 3D glasses without anyone stopping you!

Only 20 foreign films can be shown in China each year and Chinese movies always are given priority.

I did have an interesting conversation with a Chinese friend of mine last night who said that some Chinese are watching it and making a "connection" with the Pandorans (not remembering the actual name of the natives) and their plight to save their land. Chinese people are going through this in cities where the gov is destroying hutongs and other homes to make way for new sky scrapers and shopping malls. There also the situation that happened when the 3 Gorges Dam was built and all the resettling of people that occurred. I haven't heard of any rebellions, though. The government is overly paranoid here, but I would hope their paranoia wouldn't get that stupid to ban Avatar because of that!

I admit that the dialog isn't great, and the themes are not original, but that seems to be the norm these days.

For me, this movie is about the (simple) message, and it conveys it well. The special effects are top notch, but don't even consider seeing it on pirate copy, as even DVD won't do it justice. This movie was born to be watched in imax 3D sitting in the middle. Anything else is just settling for second best.

I'm surprised no one has asked this thus far - but isn't this kind of an odd place to ask whether anyone has watched avatar?

I have seen this movie and I think visually it is awesome.  The story is very simple and nothing too special.  But I think its totally worth going tothe theater to check it out.  especially for the 3D effects, you must see this movie in 3D.  I had a few friend see it in 2D and their reviews were much different than the ones that saw it in 3D.  All in all..  a very good movie

one of my nephews was a graphic designer doing the special effects on the movie.  Spent 18 months in New Zealand working with James Cameron and co. on this.

Not strange at all bro. The Q & A and the Chat Sections are to talk about whatever you want - doesn't have to be sex related. There are a lot of smart, very well educated guys here so if you want advice on finance, electronics, games, travel, health, sports, gambling, restaurants, education, legal and anything else you can think of - just feel free to ask.

TIP: For non-Chinese readers, the AMC theatres (Festival Walk & Pacific Place) show the 3D version that has English subtitles as well as the Chinese subtitles whenever they speak the alien language. Other versions only have the Chinese subtitles when they speak alien, so non-Chinese readers end up not knowing what is being said!

I saw it when back in the UK and thought it was pretty good, well I didn't fall asleep in the first 15 minutes which was a good sign and my kids loved it. Tip if you're watching the 3D version is don't sit right at the back of the theatre which is where we did, you don't get the full effect. We moved to the middle and it was much better

I really appreciate the new world creation with the lightening plant, connection between nature and the avatar.
But the story is really common. One stubborn american soldier who want to kill everyone on his way.
But I really like the movie.
