I really dont want to buy a cell phone for such a short stay. My question is,is it possible to visit the girls hotel without using a cell phone to get instructions? I was hoping I could just get the information with my first call to the papa from my hotel. You can ask to use a phone in the hotel loobby or ask if they have a pay phone. Hotel staff are usually very helpful, especially if you look like a visitor. I'm NOT Jake !!

#5 Post at 21-9-2009 15:50  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L just get a prepaid SIM card. if you going to be in HK and the mainland, you can consider getting the "2 in 1" SIM card offered by China Mobile. with one SIM card, you get both a mainland and a HK number. so when you are in HK and make a call, your HK number will be displayed. on the mainland, your mainland number will be displayed. very handy. recharge cards are readily available in both HK and China. you get 90-180 days validity on your SIM card numbers each time you recharge. if you are going to be in this part of the world often, i highly recommend getting this.

#6 Post at 21-9-2009 16:37  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L the 2 in 1 offered by China Mobile doesn't really have great rates, especially when you're in HK.  If you're traveling back and forth a lot, I would recommend getting a dual SIM phone, and just getting two prepaid SIMs, one from HK, one from China.  The rates are better. Or just flip back and forth between the two SIMs.  The dual SIM phone is awesome - back home in the US, I have one, which is my regular phone number that everyone knows, and one for mongering, which I use to call/receive calls to/from mamasans.

Probably be easier than asking the hotel people to use the phone.hahaha I do have my phone activated to be used anyplace in the world but it does cost a shit load if you do use it much. #9 Post at 22-9-2009 01:46  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L I have an iPhone clone which has a dual SIM - CECT P168C, that I got earlier last year for around $400RMB.  Pretty comparable to a 2G phone, so I'm reasonably satisfied with it.  I'm one of those types that typically switches phones every year, so not sure about whether or not it will break down.  (currently using a different phone now with no dual sim).  Battery life is pretty good too (can get about a day and a half with say 30 minutes of talking for the day), and the battery is even removable, so I have an extra battery for it (unlike the regular iPhone, whose battery cannot be pulled out). Many of the phones from China and HK are dual SIM, so you shouldn't have a problem finding one.

Sin Tat is a pretty decent place...shitloads of phone places up and down Sai Yeung Choi Street in MK.

It is not the same as using a dual simcard - DUAL STANDBY phone whereby both sims are simultaneously active and ready to receive and make phone calls.  This type of phone basically is 2 separate phones in 1 body which allows me to answer a call on the 2nd sim while talking on the 1st sim.  But because it is really 2 separate phones in one, I was concerned that its power consumption would be so high that the battery life would not last a full day.  JeSun's post clarify the battery issue for me.

So i get off the plane and just get the local prepaid card and load it into my mobile. The cost isn't that high considering that i don't usually stay beyond a week. But yeah, i just got one of those dual sim cards attachments off ebay today myself. Useful if i need to remain contactable when on foreign shores at my usual number.
