You can either check your mail and/or turn off the alert under you user options.  Drove me nuts when I first joined too. Not a good thing to have on when you're using a PDA phone either! The problem is there is no indication anywhere to tell you that is what is causing the sound. I assumed it was one of the ad banners playing the sound. Would be good to disable the welcome message if possible or add a blurb in the FAQ? But you are right it could have put off a lot of people - the ding dong ding dong sort of drives u a bit crazy!
