It probably means TV... As in tv... Television.

In Hong Kong we usually refer to Karaoke Box (or 卡啦ok ), but I often see KTV written outside HK, especially in China.

I just assumed that Karaoke sounded too Japanese for some markets (although I might be wrong)

I've yet to try a KTV with any special services. It would be hard to concentrate on singing with the KTV girls in the same room. ;-)

Karaoke Television is correct.  I believe that the term originated here in Taiwan.  Long before KTV we had MTV which were establishments that had small rooms with a VCR, Television and couch.  You could rent movies and watch them in the privacy of your own room.  In some places, girls were available to accompany you.  Anything that went on was strictly between you and the lady.  Then a few restaurants added VCR's and televisions to banquet rooms and became known as DTV's (Dinner Television.)  This was before cable TV became common and the 3 domestic television stations were not worth watching.  Later on, restaurants starting providing karaoke facilities this included the karaoke box which would mix your voice with a recorded tune and a T.V. to display the lyrics.  These became KTV's. Now we have big facilities with small rooms dedicated to groups from 2 to 20 and with their own food and beverages available.  These are what are know known  as KTV's all over asia.
