Actually no, the whole point about burning charcoal is that the body does not notice what is happening, so there is no survival reflex.  As the carbon monoxide binds with the red blood cells and takes them out of action, the body just gets more and more tired.  The person falls asleep without going through a period of panic.  This is also what makes it dangerous to do cooking inside a tent (for example) - the chance of you noticing what's happening and saving yourself is much less than with other threats to your life.
