#1 Post at 9-9-2014 14:41  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Gutter oil and massage oil The recent headlines about gutter oil used in food made me wonder how safe is the massage oil that is used by spas and independent masseuses.   Should we start to worry about really nasty substances coming into contact with the most sensitive skin on our bodies and having cancer in 10-20 years? Yes, could bring my own, but that could be hard to explain away if discovered by an SO.

#5 Post at 9-9-2014 18:05  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Reply #4 enzo's post I understood a plant in Taiwan boiled scrap from leather tanners to extract the oil.  It was then combined with standard animal fat to create low-cost lard that was then sold to bakeries in Taiwan and Hong Kong.   They call it "gutter oil" because in China, where such cases are more common, gutter oil is oil that's been extracted from restaurant gutters and then sold as virgin vegetable oil.   It's "food," not diesel.

#8 Post at 10-9-2014 15:05  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Reply #1 deadliner's post I go for massage very often in China, so thru the years, I have a few regulars at each massage place. over the years, many of them quit their jobs due to various reasons; going home, getting married, change job, etc. but the most interesting reason given by 3 different masseuses (from different parlours); they intend to have a baby in 1-2yrs, so they need to quit. at first, I thought that they need a break is because of the long and irregular hours of their job. but on further probing, they said the miscarriage rate amongst masseuses is very high. it could be due to the "gutter" essence oil they use, so most of them rather quit their jobs than to risk having miscarriage.
