Thailand Phuket - Exchange RMB to THB?

hey all,

This might sound like a silly question to some of you. I go to Phuket soon with my family and someone told me that you cannot exchange RMB to THB ?

Is this true?

I usually just take cash when I go away and do not want to exchange to HKD or another currency to exchange THB again...

Anyone know?

Thanks

It seems to me that RMB is becoming more and more widely accepted as a currency throughout southeast Asia, especially as the number of Chinese tourists go up.  A lot go to Phuket, so I would be surprised if they didn't directly accept RMB.  However, I don't have any on-the-ground information on what kind of exchange rate you get.  It could be favorable, rather than going through other conversions to get THB.  I'm curious to know what the present situation is in Thailand, though.  Have a good trip!

Why not just take your debit card?  All the banks in Thailand take union pay.  If you had to bring cash, best place is to exchange in Bangkok, can't remember the name of the place, but give me a bit to google....

Check out this place in BKK:

They usually have the best rates, but nothing in Phuket.....

Looks like RMB is quite common.

Thanks guys and thanks Scooter but my flight is direct to Phuket. I was told they did not habe union pay there and it has been a while since I have been.

I usually to take my UK debit card but it has expired and will not arrive in time for my family to bring it over. I was also told that some places will not accept RMB which I found surprising but just though I would ask first.

I'd be surprised if you could not exchange your RMB to THB in Phuket given the increased number of Chinese tourists to Thailand nowadays.

But what I have noticed the many times I've been in BKK is that the fx spread for the RMB THB is pretty big and you will almost definitely get a better deal if you changed HKD, USD, Euro, Pound instead of the RMB.

Of course, it depends on how much you need, as it may not be worth it to change twice just to save a little.

Many top 5 star hotels at reception exchange currencies for you. You have to see the sign on the reception, you can always ring and ask before you go though.
