Going to be in Hong Kong over this period for the first time, is everything the same as normal or  is it busier/quieter than normal.
Any must do's for new years eve or place to be ?
What is the bar scene like on Christmas day? or is it dead/closed as all the white boys are home with the familiy?

Christmas in Hong Kong - and of course New Year's - is just another commercial reason to boost up business. Nothing Religious or Holy subdued about this season in Hong Kong.

Wanchai/the bar scene is good or even better than usual. The only slight thing that happens during that time is that the Pinays would be a bit thin on the ground as XMas/New Year is THE season for Pinoys to come home and be with families.

Wanchai is great over xmas and new year, not many men but loads of girls as all the dh have lots of holidays, while a lot of the phils go home as they are catholic it is not a big deal in most other south east asian countries so they all stay - plenty of thais, indoesians, vietnamese etc.

All the bars have parties and special offers, I'd say its the best time of year to be punting in wanchai!

Oh forgot about your question on where to be New Year's Eve

Always a big do at Times square in Causeway bay with shows etc going on. Mingle with the local crowd.

If you want a still more boisterous night on New Year's eve - of course Lan Kwai Fong - just be careful.  New Years Eve 1993, a bunch of victims got crushed when the heaving crowd started slipping on the steep road covered in a combination of silly string, booze, confetti etc.

The waterfront in TST next to the old KCR clock tower is also where a lot of just ordinary people g to on New Year's eve if you're in Kowloon side.

And most hotels will have black tie New years and Xmas eve galas  for the non hoi polloi.

Otherwise, Wanchai should also be heaving - but at just about any and all commercial places, expect to pay a pricey "Package" price for entry.
But you'll be able to see how they actually "count down" Christmas!  Really!

Wrong person to ask as I don't do much mongering in Hong Kong per se actually and my knowledge of Wanchai is limited to perhaps a visit there every few months when one of my Western Friends want some company there - but am sure others here will chime in!!

As far as I know, some (not all) will have such cover charge/all inclusive package on NY eve. I remember seeing some posters on such when I was there even a few weeks before the actual holiday season.

Some bars have entrance fees on new years eve but usually they let people in for free early and if it gets to busy theymay stop letting people in or charge an entrance fee - usually not a large amount of money couple of hundred at most

Wan chai is great over Xmas and new year - bit quiet on Xmas and boxing maybe but still fun to be had. Amazing 3some on Xmas eve with my indo ex and her friend - whosay Muslims don't give Xmas presents!!

Nye I can't remember any cover charges a Amazonia dusk to dawn neptunes of escape and the thing both times I have taken a girl on NYe she stay all of the 1st and on one occasion most of the 2nd
