So I had pretty weird situation happen in Kam Bong so I thought I would try to get an opinion on what the proper etiquette is here.

For those of you who do not know, Kam Bong in Sheungwan is a 9 story walkup with girls pretty much on every floor.  I was in there a few days ago and had a near altercation with an old Chinese guy.

We both walk into the elevator at the same time.  I press 9 so I can do my usual "start from the top and work my way down" routine.  The guy then immediately presses 8.

Now, living in Hong Kong, I've experienced any number of occasions where mainland Chinese people have cut me in line.  Not trying to say anything negative here as they grew up in a different world from me, but, end of the day, it pisses me off every time it happens.

The guy may have actually just wanted to go to 8 because there was someone in particular he wanted to see, but that thought didn't register.  My only thought was that he was basically conceding the 9th floor and trying to get first shot at everyone else in the building.  So...

I pressed 7.

This did not sit well with the dude.  He gave me a dirty look, then...

the m#@%* F^$*#& pressed 6.

I thought to myself "You f#*& a-hole"

After that, it got really weird in the elevator.  I was gonna start yelling, but then it occurred to me that I'm in a walkup and getting into a fight in an elevator would not be a good thing.  We just sat there, looking at each other, with the vibe being real uncomfortable as we went up.  He got off at 6, and I stayed on until 9... stopping at every floor on the way (FML).  What made it even more ridiculous is that I wound up with Flora on the 1st floor, so I didn't even need to go into the elevator in the first place.  I've reported on her in the past.  She's the same as usual.

In hindsight, I can laugh about it now.  It was kind of ridiculous.  However, I'm actually not sure what the cool thing to do here is.  My guess is that you're supposed to both go to 9, and then when you get out of the elevator, you're supposed to go separate ways because we all hate it when we're followed around while we're knocking on doors.  Not sure if going to 8 is better or not.  It seems like line-cutting but maybe it's just me.  I've been cut in line too many times here so perhaps I'm just oversensitive.

Anyways, feedback would be appreciated.

It's not a good idea to yelling at other punters. You don't wanna make yourself in any trouble or you will see yourself on the newspapers.

I feel you that it's really pissed off when you keep being cut in line or seeing a nice girl is stolen from a punter who came later than you. In you case, I would still get out on 9th and skip the floor where the old dude at while I am going down so you will get ahead of him by just giving up one floor. Or get out on the same floor as him so you won't get behind him.

Im on hulk2211 side. We come from a culture which gives way and acts as polite as possible and not pushing others around. However getting in to a war over a situation isa no no

I had a situation on the MTR with a Chinese bloke who continually pushed me out of the way on the train so he could be first off. I switches carriage to avoid him; my health ismore important.

Let be fair to each other....there is plenty of girls out there.

In Frankfurt's red light district, the buildings don't have elevators so all punters have to walk up the stairs. They generally put the higher priced, better looking girls on the lower floors, and as you walk up the uglier, fatter, sketchier the girls.

At least you had an elevator bro - to get a better pick of girls, I had to run my asses up and down several flights of stairs in multiple buildings before I settled on a punt ... tha turned out to be really disappointing nevertheless.

I don't understand why you should be pieved ... you pressing 9 and he pressing 8 in the lift is not the same as you standing in front of the door and someone barges in or someone keeps following you whenever you knock on the doors ... this is not cutting in line nor anywhere near it !

Probably because I've had run-ins with mannerless chinese too many times.  Admittedly I think I overreacted but I blame the 500 chinese people who have tried to cut me in line in the past year.  If this happened back home in the US, i wouldnt have thought twice about it.

The weird thing I find is Why do you press 7th? Arent you going up to 9?
whether he press 6th / 5th/ 4th, well none fo your business and why so senstive about him pressin a floor below you.

If I'm coming off racist, im totally not trying to be and apologize if I did.  Im asian myself, but born in the US, so I dont get the behavior I see here sometimes.

Frankly, I think you behaved rather childishly in this incident. I have had countless incidents whereby people from PRC cut queue and plainly just being rude, but I also learnt that it doesn't look good on me if I started behaving just like them.

I'd usually just give them a dirty look or just tactfully and firmly tell them to get back in queue. Usually someone else in line (if there are many other people lining up) will also make noise...so I'd rather the next person behaving like them, than me.

Agreed, I've been in places where it just seems cultural that they don't generally queue, and as such, try to barge to the front of the queue.

In this case, there's no queue to speak of, and its more just good punt hunting by the guy, by just trying to peek at the girls before you might take his choice. Just as you got cut at him for trying to sneak ahead, he got cut at you for trying to do the same. Except you were obviously doing it to get in front again, whereas you didn't know he was trying to get ahead until he hit 6 ...

I know this could have really angered you but, before I read to the point at which you became frustrated, I read this as a sketch from a comedy show (monty python?)!

I don't mean to offend and I hope you don't take this in that way but it almost sounds like some kind of elevator-related russian roulette.

Regarding etiquette, I'd imagine just choosing a floor that you're happy with would be normal and more stress-free.

Haha...that's one hell of a funny story. My take though is that you definitely overreacted to that. I mean why did you immediately assume that he was going to cut your queue? Though eventually his intention was clear, I don't think I'd take him for being a queue cutter just cost he pressed a number below yours. He could very well have a specific unit in mind when he pressed the elevator button.

That said, I do understand sort of what you say about being frustrated regarding queue cutting in HK and PRC. Yeah, it's not as organized as it is back in the States or Canada, but seriously, after a while, you just get used to it. It's not big deal.

I would've just stuck with going to 9. There are lots to choose from. Your tastes might be different than his.... And if he's anxious... Better chance that he'll choose someone less than satisfactory. Haha

At most, the old guy can only punt with one girl. So with 9 floors of talent, there would be more than plenty for you. This hobby is for enjoyment, so enjoy it.

Very funny!! Probably both you insensitive punters didn't notice poor little me who really wanted to get up to the 9th floor and ended up having to wait for the elevator stopping on every damn floor because of your little elevator game!  I'm kidding of course. I got off at the 3rd floor because I didn't want to end up sitting in the police station explaining why there are two bloody punters caught in an elevator with me and blood splatter on my shirt to my wife!

In all seriousness, is there not enough quality poon at KB to be had by everyone at this inflated price level?!! Maybe the girls there need to start implementing a "take a number" system and we all wait in the lobby waiting for our number to be indicated by which floor and room!

to some PRC chinese, queuing is not an option.
they are brought up that way.
the elders who survived the Great Famine, teach their children, "You gotta fight for your food, if you queue for your food, you die and become a hungry ghost."
it's not something that people from other culture can understand.

many people complain about PRC people spitting everywhere they go.
u try spending some time in the rural villages, and you will hear elders telling the children to spit more.
since they can't afford toothbrush / toothpaste, they need to maintain oral hygiene by spitting more often.
more spit out of the mouth, means more saliva generation. = this is their way of oral hygiene.

to them, i was probably a rude SOB.
but they did not complain, because i was a visitor, and they knew that I DID NOT UNDERSTAND THEIR CULTURE, even though we were all yellow-skinned.

I've heard this saliva thing from one of the WGs. She tells me that it helps to maintain good breath. Also, as part of the good breath regimen, one should also drink a lot of hot tea and warm water. Cold water is like a serious no-no.
