A couple months ago in China I was walking around town, it was my last nite on business trip and had a bit of free time.I was not in a real tourist area, there were some shops and some restaurants but the place was a bit quiet around 10pm. It was cold and people were wearing winter clothing.

My employee is checking out which train/mgr/subway whatever it's called in China, we need to take to get back to the hotel.  She is a HK local.  So she steps away to read the signs and I'm standing alone on the sidewalk.

A girl approaches, looks mid to early 20's, dressed normal, jeans coat, purse.  We make eye contact and she doesn't look away.  I'm immediately surprised cuz I find the Asian ladies avoid a lot of eye contact.  She's cute even with some acne, nice figure and walking slowly without any real purposes.

We hold eye contact for a while and she passes.  Then after she passes she says, "excuse me, where did you get that jacket?". It's a jacket of an American sports team.  It was such a surprising question all I could say was,"huh...the U.S."

She says, "the U.S.?   Uh..never mind.".  She stutters a bit then starts to walk away.   I just say, "what happened?".    She just apologizes and walks away.

I'm totally lost.  My employee asks me what that was about.  I tell her I have no clue.

It was driving me nuts as I was walking down to the train.  Why the fuck did she ask about my jacket?  Was she a fan, did she get embarrassed, obviously something made her uncomfortable and she took off.

My employee said, if it's bothering you that much go find out.  So I go back and I find her several minutes later in a coffee shop.

She is shocked to see me but I ask her in a friendly why she was asking about my jacket.  She says,  "you came back to ask me that.".  I explain to her it's my favorite team and wanted to know if she's a fan.

She downloads a pic of formula 1 racing and says she thought that's what it was.  It took several minutes to get that understood.

During our conversation she asked me 3-4 times When I'm leaving. She kept saying she's visiting for some work, every time I ask her what she does she says she's a student, but visiting for some work.  I keep asking what does she do but she avoids the question.

After a while she says she is from Taiwan studying in Singapore but she doesn't like it so she is visiting a friend to discuss how to break it to her parents she wants to move to panama cuz she likes Spanish.  I try a couple phrases in Spanish but she doesn't know shit.  She said she had one semester but the stuff I said she would have learned the first week.

Her story is fucking weird, it's so weird it sounds believable cuz who would make up shit like that.

She seems like she's holding back something and she keeps asking me when I'm leaving. Fuck, I have to leave tomorrow.

She doesn't say how long she is staying, overall very friendly, cute and fun girl.  She gives me her Skype account, it is really long and takes extreme care in making sure I get it right.

I meetup with my employee again and this mystery girl continues to amble and wander the street.  WTF just occurred.  Damn I wish I could have bought Hera drink and figured out what was going on.  

Was she a random friendly college student?  Hard to imagine, I've never been approached by an Asian girl unless she was a WG, they don't seem like the type to stop and make eye contact with foreigners unless they are selling.

But this girl wore no makeup, was friendly and sweet but nothing sensual, no " massage" question or anything.  Or did she. First approach me but then saw my employee and then ran away?  I dunno.  Maybe it was just an innocent encounter?

Skype turned out to be a bust.  Her contact name was real, but tried 2-3 times to say hello but never got a reply.   No fucking clue.

There are always a few nut cases out there. who knows what she thinks and girls are dime a dozen. Even I try not to dwell on the unexplained encounters.

Funny how a girl can get in your brain.

We all have stories like these.., We're so used to being the hunter we sometimes fail to realize when we're being hunted until a moment too late.  And then your mind does a free-spin trying to replay events and figure out how to rescue the situation.

She was "into" your company in one way or another.  Whether as a civvie or as a WG it is hard to say, but girls tend not to pass out their contact info to guys they aren't interested in.  

Anyway, her story seemed like B.S. alright, but who knows.., could have just been a nutcase.

Not a WG imo. I find China mainland girls do make more eye contact than HK girls, much more. HK girls seem more 'hardened' whereas China they're just more straightforward in their thinking and manner.

That's what I was wondering, because in HK every time I'm approached by a woman or even make eye contact like that it is a WG.

My first encounter with one of these "is she or isn't she?" was in Zhongshan. Was assigned there to work with a colleague based there. After a spicy dinner they dtoppedme off at my hotel about 10pm. I was bored shitless so I wandered the town. Alot of circular pedestrian footbridges covering each corner of the massive crossroads.
When I wandered around, I noticed a girl here, a girl there, who would look and me and not visually let go. They'd even turn their whole bodies towards you. They're dressed normally, nothing very sexy. Just weird like I was an alien or something with two heads. They even tried to ask me something innocuous like "what's the time?" and me being stupidly naive then (10yrs ago! Lol!) I just told thr time and moved on.
Told my colleague about it and he said they're probably WGs.
Interesting.
On my next assignment there I gave it a try.
Wandered around until I found a good looking one (quite alot of them were very ordinary looking) and again, started with an innocent question like the time. Conversation veered to "are you here for only a short while?" and then I said "yes, alone and lonely". Bingo! Her eyes light up and she throws her arms around me in "sympathy". ;)
On the (loooong!) walk back to my hotel, we both get those weird looks again from all the other girls I passed earlier. This time it's one more of envy.
So yes for me it was a quick shag and cheap too. In your case, it's not so easy to sayespecially since she had a kind of story but not, but end of the day I think she just couldn't communicate in English well enough to give you a clear indication of her being an innocent student or not. I think if this happens again you can try to direct the question towards ones apparent situation of whether she's alone, feels alone, wants company, wants more, etc. You might even be lucky and only have to "pay" in language tuition fees!
One of my friends struck gold in Shanghai by just talking English at a local bar with a mate, and then got surrounded by proper professional lawyers who just wNted to practice their English, led to jokes and flirting then a free shag in the bed.that was well before every compan started putting in their own offices into there.

One of my most memorable moments like this was in LKF (party area of HK for you non-HK'ers) about a year ago.

I strolled up the hill into Bar George.  A very cute 30-something Korean girl is sitting alone and eyes me just a little too long.  Not the eye-contact a WG makes so you KNOW, but not the contact a non-interested solo civvie makes either.  Hmmm, I think, I'm gonna play this hand!  I grab a drink and, as fate would have it, the only free stool in the place was beside her!  Christ.., there IS a God!!  

I sit.  We chat.  The chat is going exceptionally well.  We're laughing, talking about Seoul and Hk - the differences, etc.  We're both on a third drink now and feeling fine.  But I CAN'T TELL if she's a civvie or not.  Oh well. Full Steam Ahead!  I ask where she's staying.  Far away!  Damn.  Hmmmm.  I tell her I was thinking of getting a room nearby so I could stay the nite.  Pause.  Pause.  Cricket.  Cricket.  

She replied:  let's go!

Anyway, in the morning I wake, we screw again.  (Awesome, by the way!!).  And as I am making my "leaving soon" motions she asks me for cab fare back to her hotel.  

Ahh, fair enough.  I drop $1500 on the counter with a smile.  And she suddenly exclaims, "WTF! I am not going to Shanghai!  A $100 is fine!!"

Haha.  I told her, "guess I am hung over.., thought those were twenties!".  

Never saw her again.  But a great nite!

Not WG. From my experiences, WGs tend to be a bit more upfront/blunt. But it makes a nice story though. lol

Not sure where you are from, Bro.  Hong Kong is VERY different.  By that I mean in addition to the hardcore "pros" (who indeed are direct) there are many, many types of part-time freelancers aswell.  And many are just too shy to be direct about it.

She contacted me!  WTF!

I've skyped her a few times and never got a response.  I gave up, it's been 4 months since I saw her, I don't even remember what she looks like that well and didn't even know what much to say as I had no idea if she is a WG.

She starts chatting, she's taking a break from school (hmmm, +1 for WG), she's in Beijing and then heading over to a couple other places (traveling around China for no apparent reason....+1), traveling alone....

Maybe she'll go to HK later on, and possibly to Guanzhou or other spots.

She then goes into another bizarre tale about she met a sad girl at the airport who needs to get married and wants to know if I know any single Chinese guys, WTF.  I told her I know a few single guys, if she wants to send over a pic, I can forward to them, but can't promise anything....This weird story went on for a while....Then she tried to skype phone chat, but I didn't accept, I can't do that at work.  I tell her to email me if she needs to send me a pic and let me know when she comes to HK (always ready to receive a guest)

TODAY SHE CALLS MY OFFICE!  WTF!  Then I remember I gave her my name card, WHAT THE FUCK was I thinking????  And WTF Why did she keep it for FOUR MONTHS?????  I met her for 10 minutes in a random encounter!  WhyTF would she keep my card???

She had nothing to say...Random chitchat, and laughed about her bizarre airport experience...After 2-3 minutes she's like, "Are you working?"  YES! Although I wasn't terribly busy at that moment.  I again offer her to email me a pic if she needs to and tell her to let me know if she's ever in HK.

I think she's a young bored girl.  Her parents have some money and she is traveling around having fun before she goes back to school.

Or she is a WG who is also a young bored girl.  I have no clue.  But I'm not handing out business cards to random chicks in China anymore.

Back in the U.S. I would get so many business cards, but I would lose them or toss them or they would get buried deeply in some drawer.  I think the people here take business cards more seriously.

Some girls are just WEIRD or have nothing better to do.  Or she is trying to figure out if there is a market for her here or something, but man she is really slow if this is her plan.

Yesterday was kinda fun though...I'm skyping with this girl at the same time texting with the girl I punted with 2 days ago, while working, emailing, receiving calls, and talking to my staff in the office. Jeez this hobby can keep you busy and I haven't even scratched the surface yet.

It could also be that she was new to the pickup/semi-pro scene and was waiting for you to put the move on her in your first meeting, and, btw, I've had civvies email or call me too many months later.  It doesn't seem to be unusual for them to call after months of no interaction.

I had a similar experience in Shanghai. I'm walking around a crowded area and out of nowhere girl comes up to me and starts talking to me. She said she was from Taiwan and was in Shanghai traveling and she is supposed to meet a friend in a couple hours. She then asks if I want to go have a cold beverage and chat somewhere. She says lets go to the Mcdonalds and even offered to pay. In my mind I'm wondering what this girl wants. I'm thinking it may be too early for WG's to be out since it's about 3 in the afternoon and she was dressed like a girl you would see in the states. She tells me she knew I was a foreigner by the way I dressed. I don't trust this girl and tell her I need to go back to my hotel and do some work. She then tells me it's early and that I should have fun and that she just wants to chat. Later that night I go back and pretty much get the same routine from another girl. I tell her I need to wake up early in the morning and need to head back and she starts saying to me that I should be friendly and she just wants to talk...I didn't think about it much and just forgot about it but sometimes I wonder if these girls are WG's or have some other motives.

i'd say civvie. WGs are usually more straight forward about their intentions. they have a schedule to feel with clients, and didnt come to whatever city you met them in just for vacation. thats my 2c. i've met just a lot of civvies who have money and are bored. a lot of them are especially interested if you are foreigner. especially in mainland china i get girls asking to take pictures with me cuz of my blonde hair. and when i can speak to them in chinese they always seem interested. never met a girl like this that was a WG and wanted to get paid WG fees. so just enjoy the attention

Yeah I'm thinking bored civvy with money from her parents.  I guess these girls have a lot of free time. The four month gap tovme is strange but good to hear others haveencountered this as well.

I hardly remember what that is like, but 18-20 years ago I think I did hav a lot of free time and spend it in ways I would never dream of now.

Sounds about right.  The clothes are a dead giveaway that you are a foreigner.  Heck even when I was in HK they knew I was probably from the States.  The Taiwanese girl was prob bored out of her wits and wanted at least a stimulating conversation from someone who was not from the local area.  If I had the time I guess it would not hurt to explore this a bit...
