That's not true at all. I've never met a Mainlander I couldn't converse with in Mandarin without any problem whatsoever. Trying to speak Mandarin to a HK'er, on the other hand, is still hit and miss.

As others have said, the biggest inconvenience of not knowing some dialect of Chinese is the difficultly sometimes encountered when trying to arrange a meeting with a Hotel Girl through her agent.
Beyond that, speaking Mandarin makes the encounters with the girls much more pleasant; not only is it more interesting to be able to chat with the girls, it also puts them at ease knowing they can communicate with you.
