Only 3 days

Is 3 days enough time to check out shenzhen?  This will be my 2nd visit to HK.  1st visit was site seeing, this will be for mongering.   I'll be spending a total of 5 days,
figure 2 in HK and 3 in China.

3 days is plenty of time for Shenzhen. I go there all the time and if you're only going to be mongering it's plenty of time. If you plan on sight seeing then that's a different story but you can still do it in 3 days, just less time for mongering.

well, it depends on if you consider the DG area as being part of your SZ itenerary.  If you have a need to to ChangPing, that's pretty much an evening there.

Also, SZ is like Southern California in the USA - it has many amusement parks that are worth visiting at least once.  Windows to the World, Folk Culture Village, Splendid China, Wild Animal Park. I would skip Minsk World.  Happy Kingdom, OCT/Swiss Mountain and Sea World I haven't been to before.  The Sea World in SZ is not the same time of Sea World that is in San Diego and Orlando BTW.

Also, going to Dameisha is possibly worth a day trip as well.  A beautiful beach.

Edit: never mind, I didn't read your post carefully enough....3 days - hmm...one for ChangPing, one for Hooker Alley, one for the saunas.  Yeah possibly enough.

If it is your first time in China, be careful. China is a lot different from HK.  A lot more crime and less people speaking English in China.      The subway is very convenient and cheap traveling around Shenzhen.

I'll be lucky to just see SZ and the general area.  I can only speak English and don't have a clue where to stay.

I'm curious if you might know if it's better to purchase your visa at the border?  or in HK?

Overall, I'm just going to wing it.  Figure I'll run into a few English speaking foreigners on the mtr ride to SZ.

Plenty of time., buy some V start on 22F of fuji and work your way down , with 6WGs per floor  @ 45 minutes each it will take 99 hours to get to 1f. Clearly not enough time.

However here is the solution, do 2 of them at a time meaning it only takes you 49.5 hours to get to 1f. the last one will have to be a triple though to cram it into 48 hours!.

Then take a cab to central for the airport express and jobs a gud un

Hate to say it - but I think you'r being overly optimistic as to your travel plans into Shenzhen.

Wing it?!

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think that visas at the border are no longer available and even if still available - it's only for holders of certain country passports only.

If you need to apply for one, it's gonna take you a minimum of 2 days in Hong Kong

"Figure I'll run into a few English speaking foreigners on the mtr ride to SZ" - You're kidding right?  And even if you do - you're gonna be able to ask him everything you need to know to be able to get around in Shenzhen?

I suggest.... strongly!! ... that you need to do a bit more research and reading and....

Just my POV

Some good info for you, i.e. just go to Lo Wu and get it, unless you are an Americanski. I see that UK passport holders have to pay more as perusual as Gordon Brown our prime minister has been pissing china off for a while, same with Russia (visa cost is x4 for UK citizens)

QUOTE:
In most cases, a visa should be obtained from a Chinese embassy or consulate before arriving anywhere in China, see the China page for more information.

Certain nationalities visiting from Hong Kong can obtain a single-entry five-day Special Economic Zone Tourism Visa on arrival for ¥160-1,000. The office is at Lo Wu (Luohu) upstairs after clearing Hong Kong immigration and customs, and currently only accepts RMB as payment. It is open 9AM-10:30PM seven days a week. It can be reached at +86 755 8232 7700. The visas are reported to be available for Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, and British passport holders. Note that the charge for UK passports is much higher at currently ¥469 for the 5-day Shenzhen visa, it is ¥160 for most other nationalities. Irish travellers are sometimes charged the high UK price when they are unlucky to get a boarder official who is unaware that the UK and Ireland are different countries. US passport holders will not get any visa and may get fined for arriving there without a valid visa! 5 day visas can be issued on arrival at Huanggang and Shekou ferry port border offices. There is no visa-on-arrival office at Lok Ma Chau (Futian).

Beside the 5-day SEZ visa you can also get a full China visa (single and double entry only) at the Luohu border. Again, UK passport holders pay more, US passport holders are not served there.

Getting a tourist visa in Hong Kong now takes 3-4 days and costs HK$150-1,100. A list of costs is available. The old approach of arriving in Hong Kong and immediately applying for a visa is no longer worth the cost as you may be forced to pay expensive hotel bills in Hong Kong until your visa is granted. Macau's visa office is less crowded and the hotels a bit cheaper, but it takes just as long. In general, only single and double entry visas are granted to visitors without HKID cards, although foreigners with previous entries into the mainland or Hong Kong student and work visas have been known to be approved for multiple entries.

You can get a taxi van from HK Airport to Huanggang border crossing, through customs and immigration, for HK$150. Well worth it if you have a valid visa. The drivers and desk staff speak English.

Bah, thats what makes it exciting!, my motorbike trip to HK via Russia and Mongolia I spoke TWO words of Russian actually I tell a lie 3 :

Benzine = petrol
Malka = milk
Dos vitdanya = goodbye.

Its more fun to stumble around, this is why I am anti GPS as you don't get lost and therefore do not get the opportunity to meet interesting people. Granted I was holy shit where the fuck am I when I was in the middle of the Gobi desert having crashed my bike.

English in SZ is pretty non-existent.  Many do speak English in the Shenzhen Commercial Centre (the big indoor mall just on the SZ side of the Luohu train station).   That's your best bet for meeting other visitors in SZ probably, by going to the mall.

thanks for all the helpful input.  I think the only way to find out about a new place is to just explore.

I see the US Government is now selling military planes to Taiwan and China is upset.  So I guess we'll see how hard it will
be for an American to get a Visa.  I might have to remind them that the US imports almost 90% of their goods and without
the American consumer they would not be where they are today, lol.

In all seriousness, I don't think it will be an issue getting a passport and if I need to stay a few more days so be it.

Cebu Pacific is running a 50 percent discount on flights from HK to Clark, so I can stay a few extra days in HK but on a
sour note my favorite 5 star hotel (Royal View Hotel) in Tsuen Wan jumped from $55 a night to $71 a night.

Nah you can get a visa, its just that historically US and British passport holders are more expensive for no other reason that you are an american or brit.

In the China embassy in UB they were arsey about everything, damned place only opened once every 3 days, and then only for 2 hours.

EU passport holders paid $25 (US)
UK holders $50
American $150
Canadian $25
All other $25

Bills had to be post 2004 bills and either 10s 20s or 5s.

Have fun in SZ but a word of advice if you plan on winging it.......make sure you pay very close attention to your persons and your wallet. Your surroundings are very important to be aware of in China. I'm not saying this to scare you but I've been the object of many a picketpockets (got $2000RMB stolen right under my nose) and numerous times thieves will scam you. Never walk into an alley with anyone you dont know, follow any mamasas who promise you too good to be true deals etc. Just be very smart about everything, trust no one and you will have fun. good luck and write up a nice report

If it wasn't for the US, China wouldn't have a place to sell their shoddy goods.
