#1 Post at 25-3-2008 12:28  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Mobile Phones G'day guys,  I'm sure this has been answered already, but I've searched and can't find any solid answers.  I've seen some chatter on the site about buying a new sim card for your mobile phone when you hit HK.  I'm not sure why this is so.  I have a mobile phone that has international roaming so I can use it anywhere.  Can someone advise me of the reason to buy a new sim?  Thanks.

#4 Post at 25-3-2008 16:46  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L I think the biggest advantage will be the cost.  Depending on your service International roaming can be very expensive.  I personally would not want use my work phone for this - but my company is a bit fussy on unnecessary roaming - so they might ask what the calls are for – particularly if the bill was large or there were a lot of calls.

They are active for 60 days from activation. You can buy refills for $HK 100 at any 7/11 or K/Circle convenience store, you can talk heaps internationally for a total of $hk 178 ! Global roaming is a rip off anywhere in the world I dare say, if you don't need to justify your phone costs to your boss it sounds like a plan. Nonetheless HK 's CSL offers you a cost effective choice and avoid Hotel rates ! PS I believe there are other carrier options available but the CSL card is tailored for HK tourists and also works in Macau.

#9 Post at 26-3-2008 10:44  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Some carriers will simlock the phone if it was subsidized (deep discount or free).  If that is the case, it will only work with their sim card.  Check with your carrier before you leave.  There are services that say they can remove the simlock for a fee--google "Simlock"  I've never tried this, but have heard it works.

The local SIM's advantage to me is it: * is temporary, you can ditch it if you get a stalker. * is anonymous * can be set to provide caller id * calls made are invisible to work, or "she who must be obeyed". My wife may see my personal phone bill. I use an old phone for this purpose so my normal phone stays up and running. I will never call home on the local pre-paid SIM phone, wifey will wonder why I am not using my roaming, or phone card.  Likewise I use a pre-paid in OZ to call girls/establshments here, and to take messsages or talk with some honeys in Asia.

Essentially, you could foward your HK mobile number to your Macau mobile number - if you decide to obtain a Macau SIM card. Think the cost is only MOP100 to obtain a card.

Imagine arranging to meet some locals, and then asking them to call your UK/USA etc phone number to contact you, even though you are both in HK.  It's not really going to happen

If the girl is not yet arrived or available when i first call they give me another time to call back... then i call again... and it can goes this way untill the girl finaly arrives. BTP already told me many times he would prefer to call me back if he can see my number and more than that if it's a local number. So I have decided to bought a SIM card last time i was there

#17 Post at 30-1-2009 12:41  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L This thread was orignially posted by me in March 2008.  I have since been in and out of HK a number of times.  On my first visit I bought a throw away phone at the airport with a pre-paid sim for around HKD600.  The sim lasted two trips and I just bought another one on my last visit in January which will last for another 6 months.   Really easy and cheaper then roaming.  Not concerend about wife / boss looking at my bill.....just wanted to make sure I could make contact so took the bro's advice early on!

I plan on visiting mostly "hotel reservation" WG's so I need a phone that displays my number in order to arrange the rendezvous. (What is the plural of "rendezvous"?)
