I've been using Windows 7 for a few months now and is a much better operating system than XP or Vista with better stability and performance and doesn't need a hi-spec PC/laptop to use it.

If you are using Vista, recommend you switching over to Win 7 asap for better performance. Other applications running on Win 7 run smoother and quicker

Have seen Win 7 - starter edition - running on a netbook and performance is quite good but obviously cannot use the aero graphical functions.

Windows 7 is great, but I'd only use it on a new computer.  Do NOT upgrade from XP to Windows 7 - you'll have to reinstall all your programs, and who in their right mind has all the install discs?

More on that, I don't think you can even upgrade from XP...period. Unless you have the 64-bit version...I could be wrong though.

Anyways, fresh install is always best - regardless of windows version. Clean boots are always easier to work with and less erronous in the future as well.

Did I spell 'erronous' right?

So i can upgrade my Vista to W7 without having to lose all my existing stuff (i.e. games, applications etc)?

First I upgraded from Vista to 7, def faster, but not by much, no hardware issues and easy install.   Then at the weekend decided to do a clean install and add another 2Gb of Ram, .....way better, really quick boot, no BSODS to date (either the RC or retail) love the new aero stuff...do it!!

Yes it can upgrade Vista, also if you have the room it will install in a separate partition and let you dual boot quite easily.  I am now running Win 7 and XP and I think this has provided the ideal for me, wish I could switch between the 2 but you can run XP virtually (limited graphically)

As compared to Vista, W7 did not receive much press on its release. I think most people
would generally agree that Vista was a bit of a letdown and XP was in fact better. So when
i heard that W7 was out...i was alittle hesistant about it, thinking that it could be another
subpar OS.

But surprisingly, most of the reviews on W7 are actually quite favourable. But its still in its early
release and i think i will check it out soon enough.

Will probably just upgrade the Vista to W7 without using both on the same computer though.
Just worried i would lose my stuff during the transition.

But thanks for the tip on the dual Vista/W7 possibility bro!

you can upgrade from XP, using custom install.  However, it's more or less the equivalent of a fresh install, doesn't retain much.

I'm still on XP too - only just did a recent install onto a new SSD to get some good startup times.

Don't fancy reinstalling everything so soon - hmm. I know I'll end up doing it eventually though!

Installing a clean Win 7 OS does not take long - roughly 30 minutes at most. Installing your other applications and stuff will take another hour or so.

man.. a few months ago, I had to re-renovate my entire office in Macau. So, seeing as my computers were all pretty old and what not, I gave my IT guy the go ahead and get 9 new computers. He asked which OS to install and I told him to go ahead with the XP cause Vista is pretty shite... Now, reading this thread, he's going to hate me when I tell him to go out and buy W7 and reinstall everything.. haha.. o well..

I doubt it. Most IT guys that I know like to play with new stuff, treating them like boys toys. I think he would thank you for letting him try something new

Does any one have an idea of how much the Windows 7 pack is going for in HK?

May put off buying it until i'm there next month if the price is better than in the UK.

I don't know but electronics (hardware or software) is generally cheaper here in Asia than in Canada. It's usually more updated too. Having went shopping at a computer mall in Taiwan the last trip I was there, I found that it's actually cheaper, more choices, and newer products there than in HK! Think you may want to take a side trip when you're in HK next.. gives you an excuse to do other things too eh?

Also, just talked to my IT guy. You guys are right, he's pretty excited... BUT.. he said I should hold off a few months. Wait till SP1 for W7 is out before purchasing. So I guess I'm stuck wtih XP and Visa for now.
