Depends on what the girls are after, which in my view is a function of their age.
18-28: want to hang out with someone "Cool" "hot" "fashionable" "popular" "bad boy" etc etc
28+: after this age they want to find someone to marry, and they learn that the types they used to hang out with are not usually the best husband material as they are not able to make a lot of money, too much of a player with women, make bad choices in life, etc.
The elements that made me a nerd in school and college and kept the girls away from me then are the same ones that got me my wife today.
