Followup on this, @Tkthedk asked which hotel it was that doesn't require key card access. The hotel was the Osaka Marriot Miyako hotel. The hotel itself was pretty nice and the location is very convenient as it's about a 15 minute walk from Tobita if that's something you're interested in. Also as part of the marriot line of hotels you can earn/redeem marriot points for your stay. Later in my trip I ended up staying at Aloft Osaka Dojima which had nicer rooms but requires keycard for the elevator.
