So I did hit up the Wanchai bars, two nights in a row, July 21 and 22. This was my impression of the different bars:
Club Amazonia: Rock club, a bit dead both nights, but they had a live band.
Sparks?: More of a bar. Didn't see any live band there. Talent was ok.
Dusk Til Dawn: Dead, dead, dead. There was a live band there though.
The Wanch: I loved the bands here so much that I ditched the plan on finding company and just stayed here on the 21st. I knew almost all the songs played I really enjoyed dancing and singing along. I saw maybe two girls out for the night, but both were with someone so not really the place to pick up anyone.
Escape: Seemed to have the best set up for looking for talent and the music was okay, but I just didn't see anyone I wanted to talk with and I saw a few that I really didn't want to engaged with. No live band, but maybe a DJ?
Embassy: By far the best looking talent around; girls are done up in evening dresses and make-up. As I was in holiday attire, I felt a bit out of place. This was the place I went to last time when it was known, I think, as Escape. If you're looking for lookers, this is where I would go, but the price tag would be higher. Didn't really like the band or the dance floor set-up.
Taboo: I liked Taboo and almost stayed, but another punter mentioned how many girls do hookah which I found a bit of a turn off when you are trying to talk with them. It was also hard to walk around to see who was there and what was available. Live band and dance floor,, but a bit crowded.
Joe Bananas: My first choice for my taste. I spent the evening of 22nd here. I had a good time dancing on the dance floor and was surprising grinded up on by a middle aged Japanese tourist and an older Thai woman. I liked the band and the music and the dance floor had (mostly) people who wanted to dance and have a good time.
I didn't actually take any talent out because I didn't really see much. There was one girl I tried to pick up, but she wasn't having it and there was another on the dance floor, but she wanted to stick with her friends. Still, I had a really good time the two nights out and would go back.
FYI: The area is a bit dead until about 10pm. It can get really rocking around midnight. I got there as early as 6pm and it was soooo quiet. | |
