Even before i read the article it was obvious he bf is a mob boss. Running a gambling ring confirms it. She's with a bodyguard because competing rings will have vested interest in catching them and blackmailing them if they were off-guard. The mob boss may not necessarily care about one of his many girl friends per se, but he needs to save face and maintain hold on his authority by preventing potential humiliation to him.
Didn't you grow up with mothers or grandmas telling you don't look at the mafia the wrong way? This went well beyond looking at them the wrong way.
