I have many fond memories of it but still regret to this day that I didn't explore more of it. The streetwalkers, little bars and street food on Lianhua Lu...
I think many of us do. I recall those standalone fruit juice stalls on that street. On my '07 visit, I sat there with fellow monger Deputy Dawg and his pal, drinking fruit juice and watching the streetwalker scene. I've never seen anything like that outside Pattaya--a sea of well lit cuties, the street was lit up and they were out there, so many sweet young things...
The cops didn't care, but there was some auntie shining shoes for patrons of these juice bars. She was shining buddy's shoes when some cheese patrol coppers came up and started giving her a hard time. I'm like BITCH, PLEASE...you're giving the shoe auntie a hard time, WTF?! So after he was done I asked her to shine by beat-up Nikes.
She charged 4 kuai IIRC. Maybe 3. I handed her some tattered banknotes for the fee, then added an extra 1 RMB banknote. Her face lit up like a Christmas tree. It was great.
The girls were relentless--they had Post-It notes with their phone numbers and were all over my pals (they're ethnic Asian, I'm not). Even as a gwailo I got a couple of techs who Post-It'd me anyway. One stood right in front of me blinking her false eyelashes, trying to look cute.
