I think the initial intent when the admins removed the RA10 requirement to read the posts was to increase traffic enough to support advertising. I didn't like that zero RA level at first because of the privacy issue and google bot recording but once the privacy issue was resolved I thought that the advertising might help insure the longevity of the forum so I reluctantly supported it.
I'm beginning to think that the move for open access is backfiring and the no-RA model is counterintuitive. Readership may very well have risen since there is no requirement to post in order to view the posts but I think this is only a short term effect. However since there is no requirement to post in order view posts, the postings have dropped off. This means the readership may eventually drop off due to lack of content and, as we know... content is everything thing when it comes to the web.
I'm not sure what the best solution is yet but perhaps a return to a minimum RA to view some forums might help. For instance, keep the
"lounge", the information threads, "mongoring", "newbies" and "rest of the world" open to the public but maybe require minimal RA or even just registration and one post for the rest. Walkups especially needs to be at least RA 10 accessible since this is where most encounters occur and where reports are most needed and also where they are most useful.
