I'll try to answer this the best I can. Its possible I just had bad luck. The good news is I am protected (see above) and there is almost zero damaged done to me. SA or not, there is risk in the activities we do. Its how we deal those risk/rewards and some luck mixed in.
As Jeffzeke alluded, SA is a lot of work, I mean a lot. I believe the rewards are there and it has worked for me (I'll post reports when I get a chance). If you just want a simple one hour session, just go to those listed sites like P411. They have a business and reputation to uphold.
Simple answer for commonalities is if you go for the low hanging fruit, your risk is the highest. Flipside its the easiest to meet the girl for per meet. They will message you one sentence and & to the point. Want to hang out? Can I be your SB? I want a FWB. Text me at (insert cell #). I made the newbie error of messaging them. Some are pro and want a P2P session which will work for some of us. I go past that and create a dialogue and get to know them a bit. Most scammer/blackmailer won't spend the timer/energy going back & forth messaging each other. Once I get comfortable, I will move forward.
As I noted, I am about now 3 weeks new into SA. Few dozen females clicked on requesting my private photos without messaging me. I quickly learned to ignore them. If their profile and pictures seem a bit normal, I will open a dialog. Some have asked, why won't you let me see your picture? I tell them I am a private person and it will take time for me to get comfortable. The good ones will respect you and continue the conversation. I respect the females too and do not badger them for pictures. They have complained the pervs ask for nude pics and freaky requests. Its a mutual respect with these girls. Some are very highly educated, hot looking and are on a path of career success. Depending what you are looking for, there are some real gems out there.
Funny thing I should note, the best girls I chatted up with do not ask me for pictures. I am not sure if that is a unusual experience but that seem to hold true so far
I was a bit freaked out in the beginning but I see this as a learning experience. So I fine tune how to deal with this crap. Blackmail/Ransom is the new thing with social media environment. I believe there are some laws in the states about revenge porn. Then there is public shaming online and bullying people to death online. All this crap isn't just a SA thing, its something we need to be aware of.
