And I've read some reports about them avoiding the police.

The girls are in HKG legally, but their visa (like many visas) doesn't allow them to work while in HKG. Prostitution falls under paid work. Thus the girls get caught and charged for violating their visas. This is really the same as say people on student visas who aren't legally allowed to work either due to the nature of the student visa.

How do I approach them.  Do I just look like a john and give eye contact?  Wait for them to approach me?

This is the nerveracking part heh. There are several ways. You can make eye contact from afar and use head nods and hand signals. You can go right up and discreetly talk to the girl. Or you can let the girl talk to you -- though this has only happened to me maybe 2-3 times in all my years and the hundreds of girls which I've seen.

Is the cost really only $150-$250?  What does that get me and why is it so low?  Usually I'm suspicious when things are too good of a deal.

It's more in the $250-900 range, with the average being $300-400. Quantity over quality. You're really only getting 15 minutes and the absolute minimum service.

I heard there is no showers.  And that really bothers me.

There are showers. It's just that 99% of the time you won't be offered one. And even in that 1% where you are offered a shower, there won't be any towels! Why not just go home and shower?
I've taken showers at the gym on days where I wasn't heading straight home.

Due to the less clean environment.  Would the chances of catching something be higher since hygiene is less of a factor?

Like catching malaria? In an environment with dirty conditions, realistically in HKG you would only maybe catch vector-borne diseases and even this is really stretching it. You would have a better chance of catching a cold from kissing your wife than anything from being in a dirty room in HKG.

The hygiene of some streetwalkers does gross me out (and yet I keep going back). But you have to understand that it's not the girls' choice. Most of the time they're not provided with much in terms of toiletries and also they're only keeping 30-40% of what customers are giving them. This means that the girls have to finish as many customers as possible per day and this seems to come at the cost of personal hygiene. That said, I've seen streetwalkers take showers before and after with me as well.

Having been in a number of dirty rooms which streetwalkers use, it's more that it appears that the sheets aren't regularly changed and the floor isn't regularly mopped. The rooms don't belong to the girls and the girls are only in town for like 10 days so they have no care about keeping it clean. It's not that the girls choose to work in a dirty room, it's that they don't have too many options available.

I don't want to walk past the red light area and approach someone who I though was a WG and have them make a scene about it.

This has happened to me in Mong Kok. Just apologize and quickly walk away.
