I highly recommend paying for the Pleco OCR. It's very useful for reading signs and menus.
DianHua and DH Audio work okay if you need offline translations. I have also tried SayHi, but I don't use it anymore.
Google translate can work well, but you need to understand the structure of the Chinese language. I'm not going to go into the finer details here, but if you write your English with the right Chinese sentence structure it generally comes out okay.
At the same time, there are just some common words used in Chinese and some that are not commonly used. For example, in English you might say "Can I take a picture?" but for the proper translation you should ask "Can I shoot a photo?"
Always translate back the results you get from the software to make sure it still makes sense. And pay attention to how the messages you receive are written.
Finally, remember that if the girl speaks Cantonese she may write some words differently, and your software (set to Mandarin) might give you strange translations. | |
