You have ignored the last sentence, "Now… ask yourself: Which of these two men had it better?" It's not asking for takers, just which of the 2 had it better.
Yes the bracketed comment is trying to lead you pick one option over the other, but think we all understand that putting something in brackets, in this context, means that the author is expressing an opinion. I doubt that there has been too many studies done on this 'opinion'. |
