My introduction to yellow fever came when I was about 10 years old.
My father became an engineer with a research company that was looking to boost demand for the Malaysian natural rubber harvest. The industry had collapsed after 1945 when synthetic alternatives to natural rubber developed during the war dominated the world trade. The Malaysian government, especially after independence in 1957, was very eager to reestablish the plantations that had thrived before the war.
The company was sited in the United Kingdom and had close connections with British chemical companies such as ICI and Smith Klein French. It was largely financed by the new Malaysian government and they sent over Malaysian employees who administered the company while the United Kingdom provided many of the technical staff. Most of the Malaysians were of from the Chinese community.
My contact with them came at social events such as Christmas parties and summer picnics. I cannot fully explain how stunned I was by the beauty of the Malaysian females, both young and old. They were so different and exotic from us Caucasians.
Fortunately for me I have never recovered this yellow fever. Now, in middle age, I do not look elsewhere for beauty and sexual gratification.; | |
