Believe the answer to this question lies in the socio-economic up-bringing and analysis of the protagonists; with more emphasis on the economic side of the equation.
I have noticed that as a country/society gets richer and economic opportunities arises - including and encompassing that for the women in that society - that the women becomes more strident and even "macho" (!! + LOL) in their demands! For they can well afford to do so.
And even within the sub-strata in any particular society, women of lesser economic means are USUALLY more pliant and easier to "subjugate."
On the male side though, I would also suggest that Guys in less developed countries/less equal marriage are more aware of their role AND responsibilities as the male of the household - and usually act accordingly.
Anyway, that is what my "perfect world symmetry rose colored lenses" tell me! HUH?
