I know which restaurant you're talking about near Rio. If you think that's good, then you have low standards on food! haha.. just joking bro. But seriously, those restaurants you went to are mediocre (IMHO) at best.

For Portuguese food try:

1) Antonio's (Michelin starred restaurant) - in Old Taipa Village (pretty small and discrete. It's located right next to a bar called Old Taipa Tavern)
2) Miramar Bar and Grill - in Coloane (pretty far away but worth the trip - my favorite so far)
3) Fernandoes - in Coloane's Hac Sa Beach. This place is ok and a bit touristy. The food is pretty good but I think the two I mentioned above is better.
4) Nga Tim's - in Coloane village. The food here is OK but the atmosphere is pretty good. I like it for its' prices and the fried calamari is awesome!

For Asian:

1) North - At the Venetian - This is by far my favorite Chinese restaurant
2) Tuk Tuk - Thai food. Located in Taipa across from Nam Sun Gardens
3) Thai restaurant at Fisherman's wharf - pretty good but a bit pricier than Tuk Tuk. They do make a pretty mean Pad Thai
4) Thai restaurant near the border - very good food here and cheap! Difficult to find. It's near a MacDonalds near the Macau/China border
5) Beijing Kitchen @ COD - Very good Peking Duck here. Have to order in advance
6) Saigon - Vietnamese food - located in the Nape area next to a DHL.
7) Luk Meen (think it's Kapok Chinese Seafood restaurant in English) - This is a Chinese restaurant and they serve some pretty mean dim sum. It's behind the Altira in Taipa.
8) Japanese restaurant @ Altira - Very good japanese food. I haven't been in a while but last time I was there they had an all you can eat + all you can drink sake thing for MOP600 ++. Great deal.
9) Lua Azul @ Macau Tower - Excellent Chinese restaurant offering really good dim sum.
10) Jockey Japanese Restaurant - Very good and reasonably priced. Located near the Taipa Stadium.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. There are literally hundreds of good places to eat though in Macau.
