First your question on flower Street vs catacombs - couldn't be further apart!!
The catacombs (as guys from ISG term it) is a series of dirt floored hovels next to the swimming pool behind the Walter hotel where locals go to, to pop a gal for RMB 30. Flower street refers to the KTV girl line ups - they are in a hall where guys walk through and the largest flower street is at the Mayflower which proudly displays up to 1,500 girls weekend nights.
On truck drivers - yes they were really doing well as there were very few of them who has dual driving licences - Hong Kong/China and the majority of exports in those days still went out through Hong Kong Ports (yantian port in Shenzhen was non-existent then). And yes, I KNOW that is the amount that they could make up to - trust me, I know this. But please note I'm talking about HK$!
And if you're surprised at the population of Dongguan - try imagining TWICE that number for Shenzhen! And this is a place that barely existed 35 years ago.
