As I advised elsewhere in this forum, some great advice I got from my father about 40 years ago in a completely different context of course and not as part of our favorite hobby:

just pay the money and chalk it up to learning.

By the way, for what it's worth, what was the nationality of the provider? as indicated above, it is very important that you evaluate the signals and get a sense of what you are in for as this helps I find that there are certain common characteristics the various providers have to which can give me a signal that it's going to be a tough situation and if I have already started with them, it's best to merely cut my losses , pay a little, and take a hike
