Yeah the smell does sound off putting but if you plan with a SO/FB you can try to make it less messy.
Plan plan plan and don't forget the lube!!
Maybe as punters we should carry around our own lube to protect ourselves against possible condom breakages. 
I recommend Play by Durex bc it's waterbased and the clean up is easier to deal with
