Thats a good question as I've never been able to figure it out myself. Perhaps a good topic to start a separate thread on?
On your observation about CP ktv's - I think I've read somewhere else that you prefer/go to KTV's by yourself. Well, especially on week-ends, KTV rooms are at a premium and is the source for mommies/managers/even KDJ's to make their minimum room spend for the number of rooms they get "allocated." The higher room spend they manage in a month, the higher number of rooms they get AND get quota/commission on for the next month.
Thus you by yourself is NOT something these KTV staff really like to entertain - for as you know, even the smallest room of most KTV's can easily accomodate 4 or even 6 guys if they only have 1 gal each.
They'd parcel out their allocated rooms to known MULTIPLE GUY spenders. Just what I think I know

I'd say that this keeping to oneself is typical behaviour of most large metropolitan areas and not just limited to Hong Kong. People got better things to do than act chivalrious or mind other peoples' business - for they all know - like you said, they can easily get their head bashed in for their efforts.
Also, I'd say that people in Hong Kong are more trained to avoid/acutely aware of the problems that interferin' can bring upon oneself.
Compared to say Singapore, where everything is quite orderly, I actually see a whole lot more fights breaking out in bars and night venues in Singapore. MY theory for this is that there really is not that much sinister going on in Singapore - and thus a bar fight just gets limited to a bar fight - and not 100 guys coming at you all at once with choppers and meat cleavers.
