Edit - I would recommend NOT asking a travel agent to do China visa applications - for one thing it's going to cost a lot more (the handling fee ON TOP OF that charged by the Ministry), but more importantly, you'd need to give up your passport with the travel agent only giving you an unofficial receipt (I had a friend who had the agent "misplace" his passport/application and he was sweating and cursng/jumping up and down for at least a couple days!).  Just line up early and apply yourself.
