i got an Canon SLR, G11 and Ixus. i usually bring the G11 (my pics of VR, Wet Wet, Flat White, Esso and M M in the HK reports section are taken with the G11). also have the HF200 Legria from Canon as HD videocam.
i personally do not suggest micro 4/3. true, there are interchangeable lenses, but the true worth of a camera is the sensor, not the lens. a regular DSLR with kit lens can outshoot any micro 4/3 camera with its highest end lens due to its superior sensor. with the size of the micro 4/3 cameras (about the same size as a G11), the sensor is physically limited by the camera casing and cant be that big to begin with.
if we're talking weight and bulk here, the micro 4/3 with a good lens is not any more portable than an entry level DSLR with kit lens (Canon's for example). and the entry level DSLR is not that heavy to begin with.
i think you get better value with an entry level DSLR which will serve you in good stead also when the photography bug finally hits you.
of course, if you want ultra portable for mongering pics, i recommend the Canon S90. its got the same sensor as the G11, and is much smaller at the expense of expandability.it is a great low light camera.
