Red packets

Is it customary to give red packets to your (regular) WGs over the CNY period? If so, how much do you give? Does it differ depending on whether she's a walk-up or hotel girl?

Bloodrage   4-1-2020 22:49  Acceptance  +1   But in Chinese culture, u only give Red packets if u are married. Is this different for WG culture that u give anyway?

yes, if she is one of your regulars, I normally give 100 per red pack over the Spring Festival. I think walk up or hotel girls are the same. 100 smackeroos

@Bloodrage

I understand that it is also customary to give red packets in other situations regardless of marriage, including to people who provide services (eg receptionists, waitersetc) and also in an employer/employee relationship

100 dollar is good enough. BTW  100 HK dollar note is red in colour. In Chinese culture, red is a lucky colour. That's why girls wear red lingerie during the New Year Day. If you put a 100 dollar note in the red packet, you will double the luck that you send symbolically. The problem is WGs do not normally work during the first two years of New Year. By the time they come back, they may not so excited from receiving red packet.

during chinese new year if i'm in HK i usually give the working girls that i visit a red packet with maybe 50 - 100 HKD.  its the symbolism of wishing them good luck in the "new Year"

@bloodrage...i think what your thinking of is when your single or young you get red packets from all your family and then once u get married you have to start paying it forward to the younger and non married generation.  but its more the symbolism of wishing somebody good luck in the new year like feelus is saying.

my uncle during Chinese new year he has a FAT stack of red packets w/10 or 20 HKD to hand out at the restaurant that he frequents and literally is passing out to every worker in the restaurant even the dishwasher and bathroom attendants come out to wish him a happy new year

Valid question @feelus. CNY is one of those times of the year when literally everyone in Hong Kong (locals / non-locals) working (across industries) expects to rcv a red packet. More than the amount its the anticipation thats exciting and makes people happy.
Its also symbolic for many reasons, besides wishing luck it also is an opportunity to show gratitude not only for that visit but for all the other times you may have visited your girl / an establishment over the year. Build relationships and goodwill, it goes a long way.

If for nothing else, its a festival, spread some joy.
